Calneva, California
Calneva () is an unincorporated community in Lassen County, California. It is located north-northeast of Doyle, at an elevation of 4009 feet (1222 m). Calneva is on the Nevada state line—its name is a portmanteau of California and Nevada. The town was developed in the hope of finding sufficient water to sustain it. However this proved problematic with the water proving too saline for drinking. This, combined with the farm prices crash of the 1920s, failure of mining ventures and the cancellation of an additional rail line led to the town declining until it was no longer viable to operate either a post office or a station there. Lassen County () is a county in the northeastern portion of the U.S. state of California. As of the 2020 census, the population was 32,730. The county seat and only incorporated city is Susanville. Lassen County comprises the Susanville, California, micropolitan statistical area. A former farming, mining and lumber area, its economy now depends on employment at one federal and two state prisons; the former in Herlong and the latter two in Susanville. The 1916 New York City polio epidemic was an infectious disease epidemic of polio ultimately infecting several thousand people, and killing over two thousand, in New York City, primarily in the borough of Brooklyn. The epidemic was officially announced in June 1916, and a special field force was assembled under the authority of Dr. Simon R. Blatteis of the New York City Health Department's Bureau of Preventable Diseases, with broad authority to quarantine those infected with polio and institute hygiene measures thought to slow the transmission of the disease. Polio was a poorly understood disease in this era, and no polio vaccine existed at this time. Official efforts to stem its spread consisted primarily of quarantines, the closure of public places, and the use of chemical disinfectants to cleanse areas where the disease had been present.
