Calkins Peak
Calkins Peak, is a peak also known as Calkens, O'Calkens Peak, Caulkens Peak, and O'Caulkens Peak. At an elevation of above sea level it is the second highest peak in the White Cloud Mountains of Idaho. The peak is located in Sawtooth National Recreation Area in Custer County about north-northwest of Castle Peak, its line parent. It is the 46th highest peak in Idaho, and it is located about north-northeast of White Cloud Peak 9 and north-northwest of D. O. Lee Peak. Calkins Peak is directly north of Slide Lake, northwest of Sheep Lake, and southwest of Tin Cup Lake. Castle Peak (Idaho)
Castle Peak () is a mountain in the western United States, the highest peak in the White Cloud Mountains of central Idaho and the Idaho Batholith. Located in Custer County, it is the 25th highest peak in the state, and the ninth most prominent. Castle Peak is within the Cecil D. Andrus–White Clouds Wilderness, which is part of Sawtooth National Recreation Area in Custer County. The towns of Stanley and Challis are both about away, and Ketchum- Sun Valley area is about from the peak. Castle Peak is managed by the U.S. Forest Service and the area surrounding the peak can be easily accessed. Camping is permitted anywhere is Sawtooth National Forest and the lakes surrounding Castle Peak provide excellent places to stay. Custer County is a rural mountain county in the center of the U.S. state of Idaho. As of the 2020 census, the population was 4,275. The county seat is Challis. White Cloud Mountains
The White Cloud Mountains are part of the Rocky Mountains of the western United States, located in central Idaho, southeast of Stanley in Custer County. The range is located within the Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) and partially within the Cecil D. Andrus–White Clouds Wilderness. The White Cloud Mountains are located on National Forest land, with numerous trails in the area. Camping is permitted anywhere on the national forest land and there are no fees to access the area. Primary access to the area is via State Highway 75, the ''Salmon River Scenic Byway,'' which accompanies the main Salmon River as it descends along the range's western and northern perimeter. The highest peak in the White Cloud Mountains, and the SNRA, is Castle Peak at . The Sawtooth Mountains are about west of the White Clouds, on the west side of the river and highway, and the Boulder Mountains are directly south of the White Clouds. Sawtooth National Recreation Area
The Sawtooth National Recreation Area (SNRA) is a national recreation area in central Idaho, United States that is managed as part of Sawtooth National Forest. The recreation area, established on August 22, 1972, is managed by the U.S. Forest Service, and includes the Sawtooth, Hemingway–Boulders, and Cecil D. Andrus–White Clouds wilderness areas. Activities within the recreation area include hiking, backpacking, White water rafting, camping, rock climbing, kayaking, mountain biking, fishing, and hunting. The SNRA headquarters are about seven miles (11 km) north of Ketchum on Highway 75. SNRA also has a ranger station in Stanley, near its northern boundary. Line Parent
A peak's line parent is the closest higher peak on the highest ridge leading away from the peak's "key col". A col is the lowest point on the ridge between two summits and is roughly synonymous with pass, gap, saddle and notch. The highest col of a peak is its key col. If there is more than one ridge which can be followed to a higher peak then the line parent is the peak closest to the key col. Usually, a line parent must meet some prominence criteria, which might vary depending on the author and the location of the peak. There are at least two other kinds of peak parentage.
