Calgary Bronks
The Calgary Bronks were a professional Canadian football team based in Calgary, Alberta, that competed in the Alberta Rugby Football Union (ARFU) in 1935 and 1936, as well as the Western Interprovincial Football Union (WIFU) from 1936 and 1940. After the Second World War they were succeeded by the Calgary Stampeders but the Bronks are not part of the Stamps franchise history or records. Notable players Bronks player include Bob Cosgrove, Paul Rowe and Bill Wusyk. Carl Cronin was head coach of the team from 1935 to 1938. Canadian Football News in 1935 The Winnipegs (soon to be known as the Blue Bombers in 1936) became the first Western Canadian team to win the Grey Cup by defeating the Hamilton Tigers, 18–12, in Hamilton. The Calgary club changed it name to Bronks. The Canadian Intercollegiate Rugby Football Union returns to play for the Grey Cup for one more season. The Winnipeg Victoria Rugby Club reformed on February 22, 1935. The nucleus of the team would be made up of players who played the 1934 season for the Deer Lodge junior team. Paul Rowe (Canadian Football)
Paul "Pappy" Rowe (January 25, 1917 – August 28, 1990) was a Canadian professional football fullback. Born in Victoria, British Columbia, he played for the Calgary Bronks (1938–1940) and Calgary Stampeders (1945–1950). He was captain of the team when Calgary won the Grey Cup in 1948 and played in the finals in 1949. In 1948, he was awarded the Dave Dryburgh Memorial Trophy. Bill Wusyk
Bill Wusyk (April 18, 1918 – December 12, 1975) was a Canadian football player. A native of Calgary, Wusyk joined his hometown Calgary Bronks in 1936, playing five seasons with them. When the team disbanded he tried out with the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1941. After the war Wusyk joined the newly formed Calgary Stampeders for what would turn out to be a 4-year stay. In 1946 he led the Western Interprovincial Football Union in scoring with 4 converts, 8 field goals and 4 rouges (singles) for 32 points. This won him an all-star and the first Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy as best player in the west. Bob Cosgrove
Bob Cosgrove was an offensive lineman in the Ontario Rugby Football Union. A graduate of the University of Montana Cosgrove began his football career in the WIFU with the Calgary Bronks. He turned professional in the east with Toronto Argonauts in 1941, but moved to the ORFU the next season with the Toronto Balmy Beach Beachers where he was an all-star. Perhaps his best season was 1943 with the wartime Toronto RCAF Hurricanes, when he was again an all-star and winner of the Imperial Oil Trophy as the ORFU most valuable player. Calgary Stampeders
The Calgary Stampeders are a professional Canadian football team based in Calgary, Alberta. The Stampeders compete in the West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The club plays its home games at McMahon Stadium and are the third-oldest active franchise in the CFL. The Stampeders were officially founded in 1945, although there were clubs operating in Calgary since the 1890s. The Calgary Stampeders have won eight Grey Cups, most recently in 2018, from their appearances in 17 Grey Cup Championship games.
