Bill Wusyk
Bill Wusyk (April 18, 1918 – December 12, 1975) was a Canadian football player. A native of Calgary, Wusyk joined his hometown Calgary Bronks in 1936, playing five seasons with them. When the team disbanded he tried out with the Vancouver Grizzlies in 1941. After the war Wusyk joined the newly formed Calgary Stampeders for what would turn out to be a 4-year stay. In 1946 he led the Western Interprovincial Football Union in scoring with 4 converts, 8 field goals and 4 rouges (singles) for 32 points. This won him an all-star and the first Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy as best player in the west. Calgary Bronks
The Calgary Bronks were a professional Canadian football team based in Calgary, Alberta, that competed in the Alberta Rugby Football Union (ARFU) in 1935 and 1936, as well as the Western Interprovincial Football Union (WIFU) from 1936 and 1940. After the Second World War they were succeeded by the Calgary Stampeders but the Bronks are not part of the Stamps franchise history or records. Calgary Stampeders
The Calgary Stampeders are a professional Canadian football team based in Calgary, Alberta. The Stampeders compete in the West Division of the Canadian Football League (CFL). The club plays its home games at McMahon Stadium and are the third-oldest active franchise in the CFL. The Stampeders were officially founded in 1945, although there were clubs operating in Calgary since the 1890s. Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy
The Jeff Nicklin Memorial Trophy is a trophy awarded to the Canadian Football League West Division's most outstanding player, chosen from the nominees from each team in the division. Either this trophy winner or the winner of the Terry Evanshen Trophy also receives the Canadian Football League Most Outstanding Player Award. The Nicklin Memorial Trophy was donated to the Western Interprovincial Football Union in 1946 by the 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion, in memory of their commanding officer, Lieutenant-Colonel Jeff Nicklin, who was killed in action on March 24, 1945. Nicklin was known as an outstanding defensive end for the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before he entered military service. Vancouver Grizzlies (football)
The Vancouver Grizzlies were a Canadian football team that played a single season in 1941 in the Western Interprovincial Football Union, the forerunner of the Canadian Football League West Division. Journalist Jim Coleman was one of the team's co-founders. League play was suspended in 1942 due to the Second World War and the team did not return when WIFU resumed in 1946. The Vancouver Grizzlies played in all-red uniforms and were created by Italo ‘Tiny’ Rader and journalist Jim Coleman as owners of the team. Western Interprovincial Football Union
The West Division is one of the two regional divisions of the Canadian Football League (CFL), its counterpart being the East Division. Although the CFL was not founded until 1958, the West Division and its clubs are descended from earlier leagues. The five teams in the West Division are the BC Lions, Calgary Stampeders, Edmonton Elks, Saskatchewan Roughriders, and Winnipeg Blue Bombers.
