Caldas Department
Caldas () is a departments of Colombia, department of Colombia named after Colombian patriotic figure Francisco José de Caldas. It is part of the Paisa Region and its capital is Manizales. The population of Caldas is 998,255, and its area is 7,291 km2. Caldas is also part of the Colombian Coffee-Growers Axis region along with the Risaralda Department, Risaralda and Quindio Department, Quindio departments, which were politically separated from Caldas in 1966. Departments Of Colombia
Colombia is a unitary state, unitary republic made up of thirty-two administrative divisions referred to as departments (Spanish language, Spanish: ''departamentos'', sing. ) and one Capital District (''Capital districts and territories, Distrito Capital''). Departments are administrative division, country subdivisions and are granted a certain degree of autonomy. Each department has a governor (''gobernador'') and an Assembly (''Asamblea Departamental''), elected by popular vote for a four-year period. The governor cannot be re-elected in consecutive periods. Francisco José De Caldas
Francisco José de Caldas (October 4, 1768 – October 28, 1816) was a Neogranadine lawyer, military engineer, self-taught naturalist, mathematician, geographer and inventor (he created the first hypsometer), who was executed by orders of General Pablo Morillo during the Spanish American Reconquista for being a forerunner of the fight for the independence of New Granada (modern day Colombia). Arguably the first Colombian scientist, he is often nicknamed "El Sabio" (Spanish for "The learned," "The sage" or "The wise"). Biography Early life Caldas was born in Popayán, in 1768. Chinchiná, Caldas
Chinchiná is a town and municipality located in the Department (subnational entity), department of Caldas Department, Caldas in Colombia, southwest of Manizales. Founded in 1857 by Antioquian colonists, Chinchiná is settled in a valley surrounded by coffee plantations, called "fincas", in the Central Cordillera of the Andes. Known as Colombia's "coffee heart", the town is home to the Buendía coffee factory and Cenicafé, a coffee research center. Because of its close association with coffee production, the municipality was named part of the "Colombian coffee growing axis, Coffee Cultural Landscape" UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2011. Aguadas, Caldas
Aguadas is a town and municipality in the Colombian department of Caldas. It is bordered to the north by Abejorral, to the east by Sonsón, to the southeast by Salamina, to the south by Pacora, to the west by Caramanta and Valparaiso, and to the northwest by La Pintada. The municipality of Aguadas, located in the northern part of the department, was founded in 1808 by José Narciso Estrada. In addition to the fame of Aguadeño hats (''sombrero aguadeño''), which are very similar to palm-straw Panama hats (also known as ''iraca'' in Colombia).
