The Cal 35 Cruise is an American sailboat that was designed by C. William Lapworth as a cruiser and first built in 1973. The Cal 35 Cruise is sometimes confused with the later Cal 35 series of sailboats. Production The design was built by Cal Yachts in the United States. Production was started in 1973 and ended in 1974, with a total of 120 examples of the design produced. Design The Cal 35 Cruise is a recreational keelboat, built predominantly of fiberglass, with wood trim. It has a masthead sloop rig or optional ketch rig, with a keel-stepped mast. The boat has a raked stem, a plumb transom, an internally mounted spade-type rudder controlled by a wheel and a fixed fin keel. It displaces and carries of ballast. William Lapworth
Charles William Lapworth (12 December 1919 – 3 April 2006) was an American naval architect who designed a large number of sailboats, many of them for Cal Yachts. He was active as a designer from the early 1950s until the 1980s. Described as "one of the foremost West Coast naval architects in the post-World War II period", he has been nominated to the US National Sailing Hall of Fame. Early life Born on 12 December 1919 in Detroit, Michigan. He went to the University of Michigan, completing a degree in marine engineering and naval architecture. He went on to serve in the US Navy in World War II as an officer in the bureau of ships at Quincy, Massachusetts. He later served at naval repair base at San Diego. Professional life After the war Lapworth moved to California and became partners in a yacht design business with Merle Davis in Los Angeles. Ketch
A ketch is a two- masted sailboat whose mainmast is taller than the mizzen mast (or aft-mast), and whose mizzen mast is stepped forward of the rudder post. The mizzen mast stepped forward of the rudder post is what distinguishes the ketch from a yawl, which has its mizzen mast stepped aft of its rudder post. In the 19th and 20th centuries, ketch rigs were often employed on larger yachts and working watercraft, but ketches are also used as smaller working watercraft as short as 15 feet, or as small cruising boats, such as Bill Hanna's Tahiti ketches or L. The Express 35 is a Canadian sailboat, that was designed by Steve Killing and first built in 1984. Production The design was built by Goman Boat Limited in Midland, Ontario Canada and later by Express Yachts in the same Midland Ontario facility, after the two companies merged. C&C 35
The C&C 35, also called the Redwing 35, is a Canadian sailboat, that was designed by Cuthbertson & Cassian (C&C Designs) and first built in 1969. Production The boat was initially built in Canada by Hinterhoeller Yachts as the Redwing 35 and later renamed the C&C 35, when Hinterhoeller was merged into C&C Yachts. The C&C 34/36 is a Canadian sailboat series, designed by Robert W. Ball and first built in 1989. The mast of a sailing vessel is a tall spar, or arrangement of spars, erected more or less vertically on the centre-line of a ship or boat. Its purposes include carrying sails, spars, and derricks, and giving necessary height to a navigation light, look-out position, signal yard, control position, radio aerial or signal lamp. Large ships have several masts, with the size and configuration depending on the style of ship. Nearly all sailing masts are guyed. Hull Speed
Hull speed or displacement speed is the speed at which the wavelength of a vessel's bow wave is equal to the waterline length of the vessel. As boat speed increases from rest, the wavelength of the bow wave increases, and usually its crest-to-trough dimension (height) increases as well. When hull speed is exceeded, a vessel in displacement mode will appear to be climbing up the back of its bow wave. From a technical perspective, at hull speed the bow and stern waves interfere constructively, creating relatively large waves, and thus a relatively large value of wave drag. Ship drag for a displacement hull increases smoothly with speed as hull speed is approached and exceeded, often with no noticeable inflection at hull speed. Head (watercraft)
The head (pl. heads) is a ship's toilet. The name derives from sailing ships in which the toilet area for the regular sailors was placed at the head or bow of the ship. Design In sailing ships, the toilet was placed in the bow somewhat above the water line with vents or slots cut near the floor level allowing normal wave action to wash out the facility. Only the captain had a private toilet near his quarters, at the stern of the ship in the quarter gallery. The galley is the compartment of a ship, train, or aircraft where food is cooked and prepared. It can also refer to a land-based kitchen on a naval base, or, from a kitchen design point of view, to a straight design of the kitchen layout. Companionway
In the architecture of a ship, a companion or companionway is a raised and windowed hatchway in the ship's deck, with a ladder leading below and the hooded entrance-hatch to the main cabins. A companionway may be secured by doors or, commonly in sailboats, ''hatch boards'' which fit in grooves in the companionway frame.
