Caggiano is a town and comune in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. Geography Located near the Basilicata region, Caggiano borders the municipalities of Auletta, Pertosa, Polla, Salvitelle, Sant'Angelo Le Fratte ( PZ), Savoia di Lucania (PZ) and Vietri di Potenza (PZ). View of 240px The Vallo di Diano (also known as ''Valdiano'') is an Italian valley of the south-eastern side of Campania, in the province of Salerno. Geography Situated between the Alburni mountains and the borders of Campania with Basilicata, it is considered a geographical subregion of Cilento and is part of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano National Park, World Heritage Site of Italy from 1998. The greatest forestal park, mainly located in cilentan side, is Pruno. The area is composed by 17 municipalities, and the greatest one is Sala Consilina, with c. 12,500 inhabitants. Alburni
The Alburni are an Italian mountain range of the Province of Salerno, Campania, part of the Apennines. Due to their geomorphology, they are popularly known as the "''Dolomites of Campania''" or of Southern Italy. The highest mountain is the Panormo (1,742 amsl). Its second name, Alburno, gives the name to the whole range. Overview Part of the Lucan Apennines and included in Cilento National Park, the Alburni are located in the eastern area of Cilento, near the borders between Campania and Basilicata. In north-east the range degrades into the plain of Vallo di Diano. Some of the rivers flowing below the mountains are the Calore Lucano, Tanagro, Fasanella and Ripiti. Auletta
Auletta is a town and ''comune'' in the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-western Italy. History According to a legend retold by historian Giovan Battista Pacichelli, the name of Auletta would stem from Auleto, one of Aeneas' companions. Another suggested origin is ''olea'', the Latin word for "oil", and the town is mentioned as ''Olibola'' in 1095 and ''Olivola'' in 1131. Auletta was already fortified around the year 1000, the castle also being built in this period. Immediately the Unification of Italy, in 1861, the population rose against the Piedmontese Regio Esercito troops. 45 local people were killed in what is remembered as the ''Massacro di Auletta'' ("Auletta Massacre"). In 1943 it was bombed by the Allied due to the presence of a battery of German guns. Savoia Di Lucania
Savoia di Lucania ( Lucano: ) is a town and comune in the province of Potenza, in the Southern Italian region of Basilicata. As of 2011 its population was of 1,148. History The original name of the village was Salvia di Lucania (also simply Salvia), referring to the sage plant (''Salvia officinalis''). It was altered at the end of the 19th century to Savoia di Lucania after a local resident and anarchist, Giovanni Passannante, attempted to kill King Umberto I of Italy on November 17, 1878. In the early 2000s it was proposed to return to the original toponym, removing the references to the House of Savoy. Two committees have been constituted, one for the return to the toponym of Salvia, and another for the maintenance of the current name. Polla is a town and ''comune'' of the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-west Italy. In 2011 its population was 5,327. History The area in which the town is located was settled since prehistoric times, as evidenced by finds of bones and ceramic in a nearby cave. Pertosa is a village and ''comune'' of the province of Salerno in the Campania region of south-west Italy. In 2010 its population was 714. History Geography The village is situated in the eastern side of the province of Salerno, close to the municipalities of Auletta, Polla and Caggiano and to Alburni mountains.
