Caddo Valley Academy Complex
The Caddo Valley Academy Complex is a collection of former school buildings in Norman, Arkansas. Set well back from Main Street (Arkansas Highway 8 near the junction of 9th Street and Smokey Hollow Road, the complex includes a two-story fieldstone main building, a smaller single-story home economics building (located down the slope northwest of the main building), both located northwest of 9th Street, and a large concrete block gym with a gabled roof, located across 9th Street from the other two. The main school, built in 1924, is an outstanding local example of Craftsman styling; the 1937 home economics building also has Craftsman style; the gym was built in 1951, and is vernacular in style. The school was used until the local schools were consolidated into a new facility in 1971. The complex was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2002. Norman, Arkansas
Norman is a town in Montgomery County, Arkansas, United States. It was known as Womble until 1925. The population was 303 at the 2020 census, down from 378 in 2010. Geography The community is in southern Montgomery County at the intersection of Arkansas highways 8 and 27. It is south of Mount Ida, the county seat, and northwest of Glenwood. Norman is situated on the northeast bank of the Caddo River (which defines the town's southwestern city limits) and is surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which , or 1.23%, are water. Norman is part of a local region that was formerly known as Womble. The west end of the town is unofficially known as Middlebuster and was in the past known as "Poor Horse". There is a Caddo Native American burial ground on the southern end of town. Witt, Seibert & Halsey was an American architectural firm based in the twin cities of Texarkana, Arkansas and Texarkana, Texas, with a practice extending into Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas. It was founded by architect Sidney Stewart, but achieved prominence under Bayard Witt and Eugene C. Seibert. History Bayard Witt was born in 1880 in Witt's Foundry, Tennessee. He worked as a railroad laborer and foreman before obtaining an apprenticeship in civil engineering. In 1904 he moved to Texarkana, Arkansas, joining the office of architect Sidney Stewart,St. John's Episcopal Church NRHP Nomination (2017) who had been practicing in Texarkana since at least 1900. Highway 8 (AR 8, Ark. 8, Hwy. 8) is an east–west state highway in Lower Arkansas. The route of runs from Oklahoma State Highway 63 (SH-63) at the Oklahoma state line east across the state to US Route 65 (US 65) south of Eudora. Route description The route begins at Oklahoma State Highway 63 at the Oklahoma state line near Mena in the Ouachita National Forest and runs east. A concurrency forms with US 59/ US 71 through downtown Mena, and a concurrency with Highway 88 forms after entering the city.
