Mauldin, Arkansas
Mauldin or Mauldin Logging Camp is a ghost town in Montgomery County, Arkansas, United States. Established in 1918 by Billy Mauldin in cooperation with Thomas Rosborough, it became heavily populated by 1922 by workers drawn to industries cutting and processing virgin timber in the area. It was located between Mount Ida and Pencil Bluff. History William W. Mauldin, known as Billy Mauldin, was born in Greer County, Texas, and in 1906 had homesteaded where Mauldin would later be located. Billy Mauldin worked in cooperation with Thomas Whitaker "Whit" Rosborough, who had formed the Caddo River Timber Company in 1906, when he started the town of Rosboro, in Pike County. The town of Mauldin first began heavy production of timber in 1922. It was, like Graysonia, Arkansas, a "company-owned town", but did have a post office, school, church, and a large number of shotgun houses, along with business offices. Mount Ida, Arkansas
Mount Ida is a city in and county seat of Montgomery County, Arkansas, United States. Founded in 1842, the city saw a silver boom in the 1880s bring early prosperity and economic development to the area. Today, the economy is largely ranching, poultry farming, silviculture, and tourism around Lake Ouachita. It is known as the quartz crystal capital of the U.S. and is known worldwide for its quartz deposits. The population was 996 as of the 2020 census. History Mount Ida was incorporated on May 30, 1890. Pine Ridge, Arkansas
Pine Ridge is an unincorporated community in Oden Township, Montgomery County, Arkansas, United States. It is located at . The original name was Waters, but the name was changed in 1936 to Pine Ridge through a vote of the city's town council. Waters was the basis for the fictional town of Pine Ridge, Arkansas on the radio show ''Lum and Abner'', and the name of the real town was changed to honor and match the fictional one that made it famous. Since that time, Pine Ridge has lost its incorporation and no longer has a municipal government. The two oldest buildings in Pine Ridge, the Huddleston Store and McKinzie Store, both of which date to the first decade of the 20th century, are listed on the National Register of Historic Places and currently serve as a Lum and Abner museum and replica of the "Jot'em Down" general store heard in the radio series. Highway 88 (AR 88, Ark. 88, and Hwy. 88) is a designation for five state highways in Arkansas. All routes are maintained by the Arkansas Department of Transportation (ArDOT). Oklahoma to Washita Highway 88 (AR 88, Ark. 88, and Hwy. 88) is a state highway of in Western Arkansas. The route begins at the Oklahoma state line at OK-1 and runs west to Highway 27 at Washita. Between the western terminus and Mena, the route passes through the Ouachita Mountains and is designated as part of the Talimena Scenic Drive, an Arkansas Scenic Byway and National Scenic Byway. Arkansas Highway 27 (AR 27, Ark. 27, and Hwy. 27) is a designation for two north–south state highways in Arkansas. One route begins at US Highway 59 (US 59) and US 71 near Ben Lomond north to Highway 7 in Dardanelle. A second segment begins at Highway 7 in Dover and runs north to Highway 14 at Harriet. An original Arkansas state highway, Highway 27 was created as one continuous route in 1926, but was split around Russellville in 1961. The designation also includes Highway 27 Business, a business route in Nashville, and Highway 27N, a former alternate route near Ben Lomond deleted in the 1990s.
