Flemington Racecourse
Flemington Racecourse is a major horse racing venue located in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia. It is most notable for hosting the Melbourne Cup, which is the world's richest handicap and the world's richest 3200-metre horse race. The racecourse is situated on low alluvial flats, next to the Maribyrnong River. The area was first used for horse racing in March 1840. Overview The Flemington Racecourse site comprises 1.27 square kilometres of Crown land. The course was originally leased to the Victoria Turf Club in 1848, which merged with the Victoria Jockey Club in 1864 to form the Victoria Racing Club. The first Melbourne Cup was run in 1861. Palentino (foaled 18 October 2012) is a retired Thoroughbred racehorse and active sire trained and bred in Australia. He won the Australian Guineas and Makybe Diva Stakes, both Group One races. He won over 1.3 million dollars. Career Bred at Macleay Thoroughbred Stud in Tasmania, by Geoff and Jenny Watson, Palentino was sold as a yearling for $85,000. He had his first race at Ballarat on 30 September 2015, finishing 2nd by a head and winning $3910. A fortnight later, he had his first win at Stawell. On 7 November 2015, Palentino contested a listed race for the first time, winning by over a length at Flemington. Jockey Michelle Payne, who had recently won the Melbourne Cup, said, "Darren sent him to the beach and I didn't know what to expect today. Zabeel
Zabeel (25 October 1986 – 25 September 2015) was a New Zealand-bred racehorse who predominantly raced in Australia. He was retired to stud and became a champion sire. He is a bay son of Sir Tristram (IRE) from the Nureyev mare Lady Giselle. During his racing career, he won seven races, including the Moonee Valley Stakes in 1989 and the Australian Guineas, the Alister Clark Stakes, and the Craiglee Stakes in 1990. After retiring to stud in 1991, he sired 153 individual stakes winners of 350 stakes races, including Vengeance of Rain, who won the Dubai Sheema Classic and holds the earnings record in Hong Kong. Zabeel has also sired the Australian champions Octagonal and Might And Power, who won 17 Group One races between them, including the Caulfield and Melbourne Cups, two Cox Plates, three runnings of the Mercedes Classic, and the Sydney three-year-old triple crown. Flying Spur (horse)
Flying Spur (4 November 1992–8 May 2018) was an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse that won three Group One races, most notably the 1995 Golden Slipper. He was also the Leading sire in Australia for the 2006/07 season. Background Flying Spur was from the second crop of champion sire Danehill. He was born and bred at Arrowfield Stud in the Hunter Region of New South Wales. He was sent to the 1994 Inglis Easter Yearling Sale where he was bought for $160,000 by trainer Lee Freedman for a group of owners. The majority ownership of the horse was retained by Arrowfield Stud. Racing career Flying Spur won at his debut on the 26 November 1994 at Caulfield. Two starts later he won his first stakes races the Blue Diamond Prelude when ridden by Mick Dittman. Reset (horse)
Reset (3 November 2000 – 4 May 2021) was an Australian-bred Thoroughbred racehorse and sire by the leading sire in Australia and New Zealand, Zabeel out of the multiple Group One winner Assertive Lass. Racing career He raced only as a three-year-old, in the 2003–2004 season, and recorded five wins from as many starts, including the Cadbury Guineas and the Futurity Stakes - both at Group One level. In the Guineas, he narrowly defeated Starcraft, who went on to win two Group One races in Europe. Rather than continuing his career, Reset was sold at four years of age to Darley Stud, Australia. After 15 years as a stallion, Reset was retired by Darley in 2019, having sired 34 stakes winners and his progeny earning $55 million in prizemoney. Reset died on the 4 May 2021 aged 20 years. Apache Cat (foaled 2002) is an Australian Thoroughbred racehorse who had 43 starts for 19 wins (including eight Group One (G1) victories) and was placed on another 11 occasions from for just under $4.6 million in prize money. He was born and bred at Chatswood Stud in Victoria. He is a strikingly marked, baldy faced, chestnut gelding by the shuttle stallion, Lion Cavern (USA) from Tennessee Blaze by Whiskey Road (USA). Miss Finland is a champion Australian Thoroughbred racehorse. She is a bay mare sired by Redoute's Choice out of Forest Pearl, who was a daughter of The Oaks winner Moonshell. Miss Finland was trained by top South Australian trainer David Hayes. At the age of two years, she won the AAMI Golden Slipper, the world's richest juvenile race, which is run over 1,200 metres, and ran second in the Blue Diamond Stakes. Shamus Award (foaled 2010) is an Australian thoroughbred racehorse, and winner of the 2013 Cox Plate. He is notable for being the only horse in the history of the race to win it as a maiden. Shamus Award was sired by Snitzel (horse), Snitzel out of Sunset Express and was trained by Danny O'Brien (racehorse trainer), Danny O'Brien. Early career Shamus Award made his racing debut at Moonee Valley Racecourse on the same day as the 2012 Cox Plate running 3rd in a two year old's race. He placed 3rd in his next two races before entering his first Group One race, the 2013 Blue Diamond Stakes where as a 100/1 shot he ran an eye catching 5th. Hey Doc (foaled 7 September 2013) is a retired Australian bred thoroughbred racehorse that won four Group 1 races, most notably the Manikato Stakes on two occasions. Background Hey Doc was sold at the Inglis Victorian yearling sales for the amount of A$85,000. Racing career Hey Doc was successful in his racing debut, winning a two-year-old race at Morphettville Racecourse. As a three-year-old, Hey Doc raced on ten occasions, recording 5 wins, culminating in his first Group 1 race the Australian Guineas. In his next preparation, Hey Doc won his second Group 1 race when successful in the Manikato Stakes at the odds of 20/1.
