Cabaiguán
Cabaiguán () is a municipality and town in the province of Sancti Spíritus, Cuba. With an urban population of 30,135 is the 3rd largest town of the province. Overview It was founded in 1894, and established as a municipality in 1926. The municipality is divided into the ''consejos populares'' (i.e. "popular councils") of Cabaiguán and the villages of Neiva, Pedro Barba, Guayos and Santa Lucía. Demographics In 2004, the municipality of Cabaiguán had a population of 67,224. With a total area of , it has a population density of . Cabaiguan was known as the Cuban epicenter of migration from the Canary Islands. Economy Cabaiguán is best known for its cigars; and there is a small cigar factory where various brands of international renown are produced. Guayos
Guayos is a small town and ''consejo popular'' (i.e. "people's council") located in the municipality of Cabaiguán, province of Sancti Spíritus, Cuba. History The name of Guayos was given to the town by travelers that were inspired by trees of the same name which surrounded the town. These trees would serve travelers as a place of rest and relaxation. The town was founded by Captain Miguel Reyes, who fought with the Independence General Antonio Maceo. His daughter Mercedes Reyes was one of the first female to serve as a Major in Cuba. The Central Road ( Carretera Central) and the Railway of Cuba (Ferrocarriles de Cuba) run along the whole island and connect Guayos with all the other provinces and their capitals, including the capital of the country, as well as with other small towns on the island. Sancti Spíritus Province
Sancti Spíritus () is one of the provinces of Cuba. Its capital is the identically named Sancti Spíritus. Another major city is Trinidad. Geography The southern coast of the province is flat, but the western portion of Sancti Spíritus province is mountainous. The southeast has numerous mangroves and swamps. The northern coast contains significant wetlands and protected areas such as the Bay of Buena Vista and the Caguanes National Park. The largest man made reservoir in Cuba, the Embalse Zaza, is in Sancti Spíritus province. Placetas
Placetas () is a city in the Villa Clara Province in the center of Cuba; before the change in the country's government in 1959 the province was called Las Villas. The town is also known as ''La Villa de los Laureles'' because of its wild laurel trees. Placetas is also a ''municipio'', one of 13 subdivisions of the Villa Clara Province. Cuba's geographical center, Guaracabulla, is located in this municipality. History Placetas was founded on September 9, 1861 mainly due to the sugar production industry. Nowadays, the main produce of the area is tobacco. The main contribution to its foundation came from Jose Martinez-Fortun y Erles, a Spanish Marques and former colonel in the Spanish Army. The ''Carretera Central'' (CC), meaning "Central Road", is a west-east highway spanning the length of the island of Cuba. Remedios, Cuba
Remedios (), also known as San Juan de los Remedios, is a city and municipality located from the northern coast of Cuba, in the center of the island. It is the oldest Spanish settlement in the former Las Villas province. It is now part of the province of Villa Clara. It was declared a City by Isabella II of Spain, when the island was still a colony. Remedios is known as the Cradle of the Parrandas, possibly the Caribbean's largest and oldest traditional festival. Its patrons are John the Baptist and the Virgin of the Buenviaje. Geography Remedios is located about 4 hours by bus from Havana, and around 50 minutes from Santa Clara. Fomento is a town and municipality in the Sancti Spíritus Province of Cuba. It was founded in 1864. Geography The municipality is divided into the barrios of Fomento (municipal seat) and the village of Jíquimas. Until 1976 the villages of Juan Bravo and Güinía de Miranda were part of Fomento, when they passed in the new province of Villa Clara, as part of the municipality of Manicaragua.
