COSCO Shipping Lines
COSCO SHIPPING Lines Co., Ltd. () is a Chinese international Containerization, container transportation and shipping company. It is a subsidiary of COSCO Shipping Holdings, and its parent company is China's state-owned COSCO Shipping. History In April 1961 China's Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China, Ministry of Communications established COSCO, China Ocean Shipping Company (COSCO) as a state-owned ocean shipping enterprise in Beijing. In 1964 China Ocean Shipping Co. established a subsidiary in Shanghai, COSCO Shanghai, which later specialized in container shipping. In 1978, COSCO Shanghai's MV ''Ping Xiang Cheng'' transported 162 TEU from Port of Shanghai, Shanghai to Port Jackson, Sydney, Australia, which was the first international container voyage by a Chinese company. Li Kelin
Li Kelin (; 14 September 1942 – 1 February 2018) was a Chinese business executive who served as President of China Shipping Group, often considered the "father of the Chinese container shipping industry". Biography Li was born in Zhenhai District, Zhejiang on 14 September 1942. He graduated from Shanghai Maritime University, joined Shanghai Shipping Corporation in 1961, and was promoted to captain in 1971. He later became General Manager of Shanghai Shipping Corporation and then Deputy CEO of COSCO Group. In 1997, Li was appointed the first CEO of the newly established China Shipping Group. The global shipping industry was experiencing a severe downturn because of the 1997 Asian financial crisis, and Li seized the opportunity to purchase and order many ships at very low costs. Universe-class Container Ship
The ''Universe'' class is a series of 6 container ships built for COSCO SHIPPING Lines. The ships have a maximum theoretical capacity of 21,237 TEU. They are some of the largest container ships ever built and was the second class of ships to exceed 21,000 TEU of capacity after the OOCL G-class (21,413 TEU). At the time they were also the largest Chinese built container ships. The ships were built by Shanghai Waigaoqiao Shipbuilding at the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai. They were originally ordered for a 12 year charter by China Shipping Container Lines (CSCL). In 2016, a merger took place in which CSCL and its fleet became part of COSCO. This happened well before the ships would be finished and as a result the ships were all delivered with COSCO Shipping name and colors. Double-stack Rail Transport
Double-stack rail transport is a form of intermodal freight transport in which railroad cars carry two layers of intermodal containers. Invented in the United States in 1984, it is now being used for nearly seventy percent of United States intermodal shipments. Using double stack technology, a freight train of a given length can carry roughly twice as many containers, sharply reducing transport costs per container. On United States railroads special well cars are used for double-stack shipment to reduce the needed vertical clearance and to lower the center of gravity of a loaded car.
