COM (manga Magazine)
was a manga magazine started in January 1967 by Osamu Tezuka. It was started in response to the success of ''Garo'' (which at that time was around its highest circulation), and as a way for Tezuka and other artists to showcase more avant-garde and experimental works in manga. Phoenix (manga)
is an unfinished manga series written and illustrated by Osamu Tezuka. Tezuka considered ''Phoenix'' his "life's work"; it consists of 12 books, each of which tells a separate, self-contained story and takes place in a different era. The plots go back and forth from the remote future to prehistoric times. The story was never completed, having been cut short by Tezuka's death in 1989. Several of the stories have been adapted into anime series and OVAs, and a live-action film. As of 2007, the entire manga series is available in English-language translations. Overview ''Phoenix'' is about reincarnation. Each story generally involves a search for immortality, embodied by the blood of the eponymous bird of fire, which, as drawn by Tezuka, resembles the ''Fenghuang''. Manga (Japanese: 漫画 ) are comics or graphic novels originating from Japan. Most manga conform to a style developed in Japan in the late 19th century, and the form has a long prehistory in earlier Japanese art. Osamu Tezuka (, born , ''Tezuka Osamu''; – 9 February 1989) was a Japanese manga artist, cartoonist, and animator. Born in Osaka Prefecture, his prolific output, pioneering techniques, and innovative redefinitions of genres earned him such titles as , and . Japanese Language
is spoken natively by about 128 million people, primarily by Japanese people and primarily in Japan, the only country where it is the national language. Garo (magazine)
was a monthly manga anthology magazine in Japan, founded by Katsuichi Nagai and published by Seirindō from 1964 until 2002. It was fundamental for the emergence and development of alternative and avant-garde manga. History Katsuichi Nagai founded ''Garo'' in July 1964 in order to publish the work of ''gekiga'' artists who didn't want to work for mainstream manga magazines after the demise of the rental book industry ( ''kashihon''). The magazine offered artists artistic freedom, but didn't pay them any salaries. Nagai particularly wanted to promote Marxist ''gekiga'' artist Sanpei Shirato's work, naming the magazine after one of Shirato's ninja characters. Murasaki Yamada
, born as Mitsuko Shiratori, was a Japanese manga artist, feminist essayist and poet. She was associated with the alternative manga magazine ''Garo''. Life She made her debut as a professional manga artist in 1969 in Osamu Tezuka's avantgarde magazine '' COM'' and had formal art training before becoming a manga artist. When COM stopped being published, she started working for Garo magazine instead. Her first short story in Garo was "Aa Seken-sama" in 1971. For another short story, "Kaze no Fuku Koro", she won a Honorable Mention at the Big Comic Award associated with the ''Big Comic'' magazine. After this, she put her career on hiatus because of marriage and raising her children. She returned to ''Garo'' in 1978 and also started publishing essays, illustrations and poetry in literary magazines.
