The French National Centre for Scientific Research (, , CNRS) is the French state research organisation and is the largest fundamental science agency in Europe. In 2016, it employed 31,637 staff, including 11,137 tenured researchers, 13,415 engineers and technical staff, and 7,085 contractual workers. It is headquartered in Paris and has administrative offices in Brussels, Beijing, Tokyo, Singapore, Washington, D.C., Bonn, Moscow, Tunis, Johannesburg, Santiago de Chile, Israel, and New Delhi. Catherine Bréchignac
Catherine Bréchignac (; born 12 June 1946) is a French physicist. She is a commander of the Légion d'honneur, "secrétaire perpétuel honoraire" of the Académie des sciences and former president of the CNRS ("National Centre for Scientific Research"). ''The Times'' says she has "a formidable reputation for determination, decisiveness and an aptitude for analysing and clarifying complex matters." Bernard Meunier (born 11 March 1947) is a French chemist and academic. He has been a member of the French Academy of Sciences, Académie des sciences since 1999. René Pellat
René Pellat (24 February 1936 – 4 August 2003) was a French astrophysicist who co-founded modern plasma physics in France along with Guy Laval. He also headed major French national research agencies including the French Space Agency and the French National Centre for Scientific Research. Most academic institutions are state-run and most academics with permanent positions are civil servants, and thus are tenured (after a one-year probationary period). Several parallel career paths exist, depending on the type of institution. The three paths correspond to teacher-researchers (''enseignants-chercheurs''), researchers, and teachers. It is possible to be promoted from one path to another. Several ranks exist within each path. Georges Teissier
Georges Teissier (19 February 1900 – 7 January 1972) was a mathematical biologist who contributed to the modern synthesis with quantitative methods. Along with Philippe L'Heritier he developed methods of studying ''Drosophila'' genetics in what are known as population cages. They established a French school of population genetics that was largely unknown outside. Teissier was born in Paris where his parents were schoolteachers with a Calvinist upbringing. Jean Frédéric Joliot-Curie (; ; 19 March 1900 – 14 August 1958) was a French chemist and physicist who received the 1935 Nobel Prize in Chemistry with his wife, Irène Joliot-Curie, for their discovery of induced radioactivity. Édouard Brézin (; born 1 December 1938 Paris) is a French theoretical physicist. He is professor at Université Paris 6, working at the laboratory for theoretical physics (LPT) of the École Normale Supérieure since 1986.
