Agbaland Members
Agbaland (initiated 2012 in Bergen, Norway) is a Norwegian trio comprising the veterans Terje Isungset and Per Jørgensen expanding their duo project 'Agbalagba Daada' with the organist Sigbjørn Apeland, known from his works with Berit Opheim 1982. Biography Agbaland approaches the music in a playful manner giving the audience a sense that anything can happen, whether it is wild and noisy, or meditative and ceremonial. Terje Isungset is among the world's most creative and innovative percussionist, and has in recent years been working a lot with ice as a material for musical instrument. Per Jørgensen appears at the Nattjazz festival in many gigs, with a career ranging from solo guitar within Bergen Blues Band, to trumpet and vocal within the trio JøKleBa and the Magnetic North Orchestra. Nattjazz
Bergen International Jazz Festival or Nattjazz, is one of the largest jazz festivals of Norway. The festival has a musical profile with an emphasis on ethnic and jazz, contemporary jazz. It is held annually in late May, coinciding with Festspillene i Bergen, and is located at Verftet in Bergen. Biography The festival was arranged for the first time in 1972 at ''Håndverkeren'' in Bergen (now closed). It moved to ''Studentsenteret'' in 1978 (now demolished and rebuilt), and eventually to ''USF Verftet'' in 1994. In 2012 Nattjazz was held in different localities in ''Vågsbunnen'' because of the reconstructions of ''USF Verftet''. During the course of the festival most concerts are held indoors, but with some outdoor concerts too. The festival has also collaborated with other events, such as Festspillene i Bergen in Grieghallen. Jazz
Jazz is a music genre that originated in the African-American communities of New Orleans, Louisiana in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with its roots in blues and ragtime. Since the 1920s Jazz Age, it has been recognized as a major form of musical expression in traditional and popular music. Per Jørgensen (born 9 September 1952) is a Norwegian multi-instrumentalist with trumpet as his main instrument, also known for his vocal contributions, in collaboration with Dag Arnesen, Knut Kristiansen, Alex Riel, Jon Christensen, Jon Balke, Audun Kleive, Jan Gunnar Hoff, Marilyn Mazur, Nils Petter Molvær, Bugge Wesseltoft, and Terje Isungset. Sigbjørn Apeland
Sigbjørn Apeland (born 10 May 1966 was raised in Sveio, Norway) is a musician (organ and Harmonium) and scientist, known from several recordings and for his work in the borderland between folk music, church music and improvisational music. Career Apeland is a graduate in performing Church music at the Rogaland Musikkonservatorium (1988) and ethnomusicology from University of Bergen (1998), before he as fellow at Griegakademiet completed his Dr. art. with the thesis ''Kyrkjemusikkdiskursen: Musikklivet i Den norske kyrkja som diskursiv praksis'' (Church music discourse: The music scene in the Norwegian church as discursive practice, 2005). Terje Isungset
Terje Isungset (born May 4, 1964) is a Norwegian drummer. From his background in jazz and traditional Scandinavian music, he has designed musical instruments from non-traditional materials, including ice. Career Isungset was raised in Geilo where he played traditional dance music with his father (accordion) during his high school days. Berit Opheim
Berit Opheim Versto (born 18 June 1967 in Voss, Norway) is a Norwegian singer, known for her interpretations of folk music. Career Opheim studied at Bergen Musikkonservatorium (1987–90) and Norges Musikkhøgskole (1990–92), and has worked since 1992 for the Ole Bull Academy in Voss, as well as engagements at NTNU and Norges Musikkhøgskole. Opheim was the front figure in Orleysa (multiple releases), a soloist in Bergen Domkantori (release in 1990). A recording of ''kveding'' (a traditional Norwegian singing style) from Urnes stavkirke resulted in her debut ''Eitt steg'' (NorCD, 1996) which won her a Spellemannprisen nomination. Bergen Blues Band (1974 - 1984) was a Norwegian blues band from Bergen, Norway. Biography The band was founded and led by John Magnar Bernes (vocalist and harmonica player, alias «Hungry John»), along with Per Jørgensen on guitar (replaced by Ole Thomsen in 1981), Kåre Sandvik on piano (1974–81), Edvard Askeland bass (replaced by Rune Rønning in 1981, and later Atle Mjørlaug 1983), and Frank Jakobsen drums (replaced by Willy Korneliussen in 1976). Magnetic North Orchestra
Magnetic North Orchestra established in Oslo, Norway (1992–2005) was a Norwegian jazz orchestra, created and led by Jon Balke. MNO was originally a jazz ensemble inspired by Oslo 13, put together with strings and percussion. As Olympic musical ambassador from 1993 to 1994, for the 1994 Winter Olympics at Lillehammer, Jon Balke created the work ''Magnetic North'' for a larger group, and under this name (MNO) he has toured in Europe, USA and Japan. MNO was further developed with fourteen string musicians from "Stavanger Symfoniorkester" for the production ''Grand Magnetic'' (2001), and in a version with the "TrondheimSolistene".
