Bythaelurus
''Bythaelurus'' is a genus of deep-water catsharks and part of the family Scyliorhinidae. The genus ''Bythaelurus'' Compagno 1988 was first described as a subgenus of ''Halaelurus'' Gill 1862 based on several morphological characteristics including a soft body with thin skin, a bluntly rounded snout without a pointed, knob-like tip, and eyes not noticeably elevated on the dorsal surface of the head. Members of this genus are generally found in deep water and have more somber body coloration. Species There are currently 14 recognized species in this genus: * '' Bythaelurus alcockii'' (Garman, 1913) (Arabian catshark) * '' Bythaelurus bachi'' Weigmann ''et al.'', 2016 (Bach's catshark) * '' Bythaelurus canescens'' ( Günther, 1878) (dusky catshark) * '' Bythaelurus clevai'' ( Séret, 1987) (broadhead catshark) * '' Bythaelurus dawsoni'' ( S. Springer, 1971) (New Zealand catshark) * '' Bythaelurus giddingsi'' J. E. McCosker, Long & C. C. Baldwin, 2012 (Galápagos catshark) * '' B ...

Dusky Catshark
The dusky catshark (''Bythaelurus canescens'') is a catshark of the family Scyliorhinidae that is endemic to the southeast Pacific Ocean, off the coasts of Peru and Chile. It grows to a maximum length of 70 cm, and is oviparous like many other chondrichthyans in the Indo-Pacific. Ecology ''Bythaelurus canescens'' is deep-sea shark, generally located between depths of 250–1260 meters. It lives primarily on mud on the upper continental slopes, but can also be found on rocky bottoms. It is an important mesopredator, and is often caught it shrimp trawl nets in northern and central Chilean coasts. Sometimes ''B. canescens'' makes up to 20.3% of the total catch. In spite of this, little is known about it because it is often thrown back without further consideration. Trophic ecology studies are often done on ''B. canescens t''o obtain a general overview of their diet. Diet Studies Much of what is known about the ecology and predicted behavior of the dusky catshark is kno ...

Bythaelurus Hispidus
The bristly catshark (''Bythaelurus hispidus'') is a cat shark of the family Scyliorhinidae, found from southeastern India and the Andaman Islands, between latitudes 15° N and 5° N, at depths between 200 and 300 m. Its length usually ranges from around 20–26 cm, and it is regarded as the smallest catshark of ''Bythaelurus''. Taxonomy Bristly catsharks were first discovered by Alfred William Alcock in the Indian Ocean in 1891. The specific word, hispidus, is thought to represent the papillae that generally appeared in species live in Andaman Sea. However, it was not named as ''alcockii''. Instead, the species named ''Halaelurus alcockii'', also known as ''Bythaelurus alcockii'', is another kind of catshark commonly known as Arabian catshark discovered by a German in 1913. Appearance and habitat The bristly catshark is a small species among the shark family, and as the name suggests, it has lengthened, cat-like eyes on the side that help it to be easily d ...

Bythaelurus Naylori
The dusky snout catshark (''Bythaelurus naylori'') is a catshark of the family Scyliorhinidae. This species is found from the Southwest Indian Ridge, southwestern Indian Ocean. The specimens were collected from 89–1,443 m depth in both bottom trawls and midwater trawls. The shallowest catch record of the new species, possibly at 89 m, came from a midwater trawl. This species can be distinguished from its two closest congeners, '' B. giddingsi'' and '' B. lutarius'', by a combination of prominent comb-like dermal denticle A fish scale is a small rigid plate that grows out of the skin of a fish. The skin of most jawed fishes is covered with these protective scales, which can also provide effective camouflage through the use of reflection and colouration, as we ...s along the upper caudal-fin margin, absence of oral papillae, uniform body coloration, and noticeable dark dusky snout; ''Bythaelurus giddingsi'' has oral papillae present and a variegated color pattern, w ...

Bythaelurus Giddingsi
The jaguar catshark (''Bythaelurus giddingsi''), also known as the Galápagos catshark, is a species of catshark from the Galápagos Islands. The species was first described in 2012. This catshark is about a foot long when mature, and it is colored blackish-brown with an asymmetrical pattern of light spots. Taxonomy The species was first discovered in 1995 on an expedition to the Galápagos Islands led by John McCosker from the California Academy of Sciences. The purpose of the expedition was to film a documentary about the Galápagos Islands for the Discovery Channel, which aired in 1996. Douglas Long was the first to notice the new shark species while he was processing the fish samples that were collected during the expedition. Though not yet formally described, the name Galápagos catshark was used in non-scientific shark literature for several years prior to the published description. The species was formally described as a new species in an article by McCosker, Long an ...
