Buxton Raceway
Buxton Raceway is a motorsport venue in Buxton, Derbyshire. It is located in a remote area, three miles south of Buxton, on Dale Head Lane, off the A53 Buxton to Leek Road. The venue is primarily used for BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Cars on the 380 metre tarmac circuit but has also hosted motorcycle speedway on the adjacent Buxton Speedway track. History The site was originally known as High Edge when it was built in circa.1974 and opened shortly afterwards. It had previously been used as a site for rock festivals. It was used for banger racing and stock cars. In 1994, a team called Hi-Edge Hitmen began racing on the track. Promoted by Chris Morton and Barry Watson, the team's inaugural season was in the 1994 British League Division Three in which they finished in sixth place. The team competed for two seasons on the circuit before agreeing with the stock car promotion that a separate speedway track could be built adjacent to the main circuit. BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Cars
BriSCA Formula 1 Stock Cars is a class of single-seater stock-car-racing in the UK with custom-built cars, with races conducted on walled oval tracks of either shale or tarmac of approximately a quarter-mile in length. The cars are of an open wheel design. The cars may be of any horsepower and drivers can use any engine they choose, with Chevrolet based small or big block V8 engines being the most popular. The season runs from March through to November, with occasional meetings during Christmas time. Motorcycle Speedway
Motorcycle speedway, usually referred to simply as speedway, is a motorcycle sport involving four and sometimes up to six riders competing over four clockwise, anti-clockwise laps of an oval circuit. The motorcycles are specialist machines that use only one gear and have no brakes. Racing takes place on a flat oval track usually consisting of soil, dirt, loosely packed shale, or crushed rock (mostly used in Australia and New Zealand). The Buxton Hitmen were a speedway team in the British National League (formerly the Conference League) from 1994 to 2018. The club stopped racing in the National League after the 2018 speedway season. History The team's inaugural season was in the 1994 British League Division Three in which they finished in 6th place. They following year they finished 3rd in the 1995 Academy League before joining the Conference League (division 3). During the 2002 Speedway Conference League season the team won their first silverware when winning the Conference League Knockout Cup. In the 25 years that the team raced they always competed in the third division and their best season was 2010 when they achieved the treble. After finishing 2nd in the regular season table behind Dudley Heathens during the 2010 National League speedway season they won the playoffs, defeating Newport in the final. Chris Morton
Christopher John Morton, MBE (born 22 July 1956) is a former motorcycle speedway rider. He rode bikes from a young age at the farm of Peter Collins' parents. Brief career summary Born in Davyhulme, Lancashire, Morton made his debut for Ellesmere Port Gunners (on loan from Belle Vue Aces) on 15 May 1973. He showed rapid improvement then following an injury to Aces Captain Chris Pusey in June 1973 he was drafted into the Belle Vue team scoring 6 points on his debut in an away meeting at Cradley Heath. The following season he became British Under-21 Champion at just 17 years of age. During the late 1970s, Morton was a guest resident international rider at the famous Rowley Park Speedway in Adelaide, South Australia where he often rode against the likes of home town hero John Boulger and Mildura's Phil Crump. 1996 Speedway Conference League
The 1996 Speedway Conference League was the inaugural season of the Conference League, which was the second tier of British motorcycle speedway. It was listed as the second tier of British speedway because during 1995 and 1996 the two divisions of the British League had merged into one division only. The following season it would be a third tier/division competition.
