Buu Nygren (born December 25, 1986) is the 10th President of the Navajo Nation. Nygren-Montoya received 34,890 votes, defeating the Nez-Abeyta campaign who received 31,339 votes in the 2022 election. He was sworn in on January 10, 2023, his first political office. Nygren was born on December 25, 1986, in Blanding, Utah. He is of half Navajo and half Southern Vietnamese descent. Nygren is Táchiiʼnii clan born for Vietnamese. He attended Red Mesa High School. The President of the Navajo Nation is the head of state of the Navajo Nation. The office was created in 1991 following restructuring of the national government. The President and Vice President are elected every four years. The Navajo Nation President shall serve no more than two consecutive terms. As outlined in the Navajo Nation Code §1001-1006, until 2016, office holders had to be fluent in the Navajo language among other declared qualifications. Presently, fluency is to be determined by the Navajo voters when they cast ballots. Joe Shirley Jr. (born December 4, 1947) is a Navajo politician who is the only two-term President of the Navajo Nation. He served as president from 2003 to 2011. He lives in Chinle, Arizona, and is Tódích'íi'nii, born for Tábaahá. Personal life Shirley was born on the Navajo Nation in Chinle, AZ and raised by his grandmother since he was a toddler. Shirley is married to Vikki Shirley, MBA, and they have three sons and three daughters. Vikki is Kiyaa'nni born for the Ma'iidesh giizhnii clan. Vietnamese boat people ( vi, Thuyền nhân Việt Nam), also known simply as boat people, refers to the refugees who fled Vietnam by boat and ship following the end of the Vietnam War in 1975. This migration and humanitarian crisis was at its highest in 1978 and 1979, but continued into the early 1990s. 2022 Navajo Nation Presidential Election
The 2022 Navajo Nation presidential election took place on Tuesday, November 8th, 2022 to elect the president and vice president of the Navajo Nation. The primary election was held on August 2nd. Incumbent president Jonathan Nez ran for reelection with attorney Chad Abeyta as his running mate. Incumbent Vice President Myron Lizer did not seek re-election, instead running for U.S. House in Arizona. Nez and Abeyta advanced to the general election, as did the challenging ticket of construction manager Buu Nygren and Torreon/Star Lake Chapter President Richelle Montoya.
