2018 Navajo Nation Presidential Election
The Navajo Nation presidential election of 2018 was held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018. The candidates for President of the Navajo Nation in the general election were Jonathan Nez and Joe Shirley, Jr. Jonathan Nez and running mate Myron Lizer won the election. Although neither Nez nor Shirley were incumbents, they possessed the high name recognition associated with incumbents. The primary election was held on Tuesday, August 28, 2018 between 18 candidates for the office of Navajo Nation President. The Navajo Nation ( nv, Naabeehó Bináhásdzo), also known as Navajoland, is a Native American reservation in the United States. It occupies portions of northeastern Arizona, northwestern New Mexico, and southeastern Utah; at roughly , the Navajo Nation is the largest land area held by a Native American tribe in the U.S., exceeding ten U.S. states. Jonathan Nez (born May 26, 1975) is a Navajo politician who served as the 9th President of the Navajo Nation, President of the Navajo Nation from 2019 to 2023. He previously served as Vice President of the Navajo Nation, Vice President and as a Navajo Nation Council delegate. Myron Lizer is an American politician and businessman serving as the 10th vice president of the Navajo Nation under President Jonathan Nez. Early life and education Lizer was born in Ganado, Arizona. He received his Bachelor of Business Administration from Fort Lewis College. Career Lizer owns an Ace Hardware in Window Rock, Arizona. Lizer is a Baptist Christian and serves as the president of the school board for the Rehoboth Christian School in Rehoboth, New Mexico. Russell Begaye
Russell Begaye is a Navajo politician who served as the 8th president of Navajo Nation from May 2015 to January 2019. He was the second New Mexican Navajo to hold the Navajo Presidency. Early life and education Born in Shiprock, New Mexico, Begaye graduated from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in 1974 with a degree in political science. In 1977, Begaye received his Master of Divinity degree from the Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth, Texas. The President of the Navajo Nation is the head of state of the Navajo Nation. The office was created in 1991 following restructuring of the national government. The President and Vice President are elected every four years. The Navajo Nation President shall serve no more than two consecutive terms. As outlined in the Navajo Nation Code §1001-1006, until 2016, office holders had to be fluent in the Navajo language among other declared qualifications.
