Bukovac, Novi Sad
Bukovac ( sr-Cyrl, Буковац) is a suburban settlement of the city of Novi Sad, Serbia. It is located in Petrovaradin municipality. The village has a Serb ethnic majority and its population is 3,936 (2011 census). The name The name Bukovac is thought to be derived from ''bukva'' ('beech'). The legend says that when the first settlers settled where now village's center is, there was an old beech so they named the place Bukovac upon that tree. Geography The village is situated on the foothills of Fruška Gora mountain, and it is part of the metropolitan area of Novi Sad Around 9 kilometers from Novi Sad city center. Bukovački potok (Bukovac Stream) flows through Bukovac. History, culture and education Illyrian tumuli and necropolis have been unearthed in Bukovac, which was founded during the Ottoman rule in the 16th century by Serb settlers. Jakov Orfelin
Jakov Orfelin (Cyrillic Serbian: Јаков Орфелин, born in Vukovar or Sremski Karlovci, Habsburg monarchy, c. mid-eighteenth century – Arad, Habsburg Monarchy, 20 October 1803) was a Serbian Baroque painter. He made iconostasis for the churches of Bačka and Syrmia regions and also some portraits. He is the nephew of the painter, engraver and writer Zaharije Orfelin. Biography Jakov Orfelin received his first artistic education from his uncle Zaharije Orfelin, with whom he collaborated on church commissions later. In 1766, he pursued his art studies in Vienna at the Art Academy and took courses at the newly-founded engraving academy directed by Jacob Matthias Schmutzer (1733-1811). One of his earliest work was the iconostasis in Grgeteg Monastery (1774) which was in 1902 replaced with the iconostasis done by Uroš Predić. Milica Stojadinović-Srpkinja
Milica Stojadinovic-Srpkinja ( sr-cyr, Милица Стојадиновић Српкиња, ) (1828–1878) was a Serbian poet, sometimes called "the greatest female Serbian poet of the 19th century". Career As her fame spread beyond the confines of Serbian culture of the Austrian Empire, Prince Mihailo Obrenović would invite her to court when she came to Belgrade and Vienna-based anthropologist and poet Johann Gabriel Seidl devoted a poem to her. Boris Kovač ( sr, Борис Ковач, Boris Kovač; born 1955) is a Serbian composer and multi-instrumentalist. Stjepan Đureković (8 August 1926 – 28 July 1983) was a Croatian political dissident and businessman who was assassinated by the Yugoslavian State Security Administration (UDBA) in West Germany in 1983. He was previously the CEO of the state-owned INA petrol company. In 1982, he defected to West Germany and became active in Croatian émigré circles opposed to Yugoslavia. Dimitrije Bačević
Dimitrije Bačević (1735–1770) was a Serbian icon painter and muralist in the Baroque style. Biography Bačević studied painting at the workshop of Vasilije Romanovich and Jov Vasilijevich who came to Sremski Karlovci from Kyiv, Imperial Russia, in 1741. It was in Vasilievich's atelier that the first Serbian Baroque artists were trained, including Janko Halkozović, Vasa Ostojić, Teodor Kračun, Grigorije Davidović-Obšić, Aksentije Ostojić and Nikolaj Petrović and later at Bačević's own workshop in Sremski Karlovci. He is considered the most important representative of the Ukrainian baroque for the painted icons for the ''Nikolajevska crkva'' (Church of St. Nicholas) in Zemun in 1762. Teodor Kračun
Teodor Dimitrijević ( sr-cyr, Теодор Димитријевић; 1730–10 April 1781), known as Teodor Kračun (Теодор Крачун) was a Serbian icon and altar painter. Biography He was born at Sremska Kamenica in 1730. His original surname was Dimitrijević, but later the nickname "Kračun" stuck. He studied art under Dimitrije Bačević, a well-known icon- and portrait painter, before taking monastic vows and entering the Vienna Academy in 1769. Stefan Gavrilović
Stefan Gavrilović ( sr-Cyrl, Стефан Гавриловић, Sremski Karlovci, c. 1750-Sremski Karlovci, 1823) was an 18th-century-19th-century Serbian painter known best for his iconostasis and frescoes. He is considered one of the masters of Neoclassical and late Baroque paintings, and was very influenced by Jakov Orfelin and Teodor Kračun. Georgije Bakalović was one of his pupils.
