It is situated on the northwest shore of Beothuk Lake on the Buchans River. Herder Memorial Trophy
The Herder Memorial Trophy, or Herder, is the championship trophy awarded annually to the senior ice hockey champions of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The cast silver trophy was originally donated in 1935 by the Herder family, then owners of '' The Evening Telegram'' newspaper, as a memorial to five brothers who played hockey in St. John's. The Herder was first awarded to the Corner Brook team that won the inaugural all-Newfoundland hockey championship on March 22, 1935. The most recent winners of the Herder Memorial Trophy were the Southern Shore Breakers on April 23, 2022. History The Herder trophy was the brainchild of Ralph Herder, then president of The Evening Telegram, as a memorial to his five late brothers, Arthur, William, Douglas, Augustus and Hubert, who were all avid hockey players in St. John's, Newfoundland and Labrador. Route 370, also known as the Buchans Highway, is a east-west highway in the central portion of Newfoundland in the Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. Its eastern terminus is the intersection at the Trans-Canada Highway ( Route 1) in the Town of Badger, and the route ends at the Town of Buchans. The intersection at the Trans-Canada Highway is very unusual in nature, with a median at the access, and motorists would face a stop signs at the Trans-Canada Highway intersection soon after a stop sign upon returning from their journey on Route 370. Millertown Junction, Newfoundland And Labrador
Millertown Junction is a settlement on the island of Newfoundland in the Canadian Province of Newfoundland and Labrador. It is located at the northeast end of the small lake called Joe Glodes Pond, about where the original railway settlement was though summer cabins have spread in recent years down the eastern fringe of the lake, and a short distance to the west. Millertown Junction was last officially reported in the census in 1981 when it returned a population of 23, the latest in a series of dramatic falls connected with the closing of the railway. Mattie Mitchell
Matty Mitchell (June 1846 - 1921) was a Mi’kmaq Chieftain, guide, prospector, and explorer who contributed to the development of the Newfoundland economy. Mitchell has been described as "the greatest and most resourceful woodsman who ever lived." For this, Mitchell was recognized as a Person of National Historic Significance in 2001. Biography Mitchell was born in Halls Bay in June 1846. On 26 May 1879, he was married to Mary Ann Webb at Sandy Point. On the marriage certificate his name is transcribed as 'Matthieu Michel (Indien)'. Together they had a son, also named Matty Michell. In 1885, the family moved to Bonne Bay, where he lived the remainder of his life. In 1904, Mitchell was hired to chart the Great Northern Peninsula, working under H. C. Thomson. His extensive knowledge of waterways and other geographical features culminated in the first map drawings of the region. Beothuk Lake
Beothuk Lake, formerly Red Indian Lake, is located in the interior of central Newfoundland in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. The lake drains into the Exploits River which flows through the interior of Newfoundland and exits into the Atlantic Ocean through the Bay of Exploits. Lloyds River, the Victoria River and Star River feed into the lake. History The Beothuk, also known as 'Red Indians,' inhabited several campsites on the shore of the lake. Newfoundland Railway
The Newfoundland Railway operated on the island of Newfoundland from 1898 to 1988. With a total track length of , it was the longest narrow-gauge railway system in North America. Botwood
Botwood is a town in north-central Newfoundland, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada in Census Division 6. It is located on the west shore of the Bay of Exploits on a natural deep water harbour used by cargo ships and seaplanes throughout the town's history. Botwood was the North American terminus for the first transatlantic commercial flights. History In 1908, construction began on the Botwood Railway; the railway ran between Bishop's Falls and Botwood. It was a joint effort between the A.N.D. Company and the A. E. Reed Company of Bishop's Falls. It was to be the transportation link for the export of pulp and paper from the newly built mill at Grand Falls, NL. Area code 709 is the telephone area code in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP) for the entire Canadian province of Newfoundland and Labrador. History The first telephone system was installed in Newfoundland in 1885, but domestic long-distance calls within the Dominion of Newfoundland could be placed on a limited basis only in 1921. The first long-distance call from Newfoundland to Canada was made on January 10, 1939, by using a shortwave radio link operated by the Canadian Marconi Company in Montréal. Shortwave radio also carried calls from St. John's to London, England.
