Montgomery Township is a township in southern Somerset County, New Jersey, United States. It is located in the New York Metropolitan Area. As of the 2020 United States Census, the township’s population was 23,690, representing a 6.5% increase from the 22,354 enumerated at the 2010 United States Census, which in turn reflected an increase of 4,773 (+27.3%) from the 17,481 counted at the 2000 Census. Montgomery Township was incorporated on February 21, 1798, as one of New Jersey's initial group of 104 townships by an act of the New Jersey Legislature, from what remained of Western precinct.
