Brandlehow School
Brandlehow Primary School is in Putney in the London Borough of Wandsworth, the building was designed by Ernő Goldfinger and is Grade II listed. Location The school is in Putney SW15 on the east side of Brandlehow Road, south of Wandsworth Park and north of the railway line between Putney station and Wandsworth town station. Site history The original 'Brandlehow Road School' was a three storey building and opened on the site in February 1902, the site was hit during bombing in World War Two, the London County Council Bomb Damage Map (1945) shows many buildings were damaged beyond repair. Building The existing building was designed by Ernő Goldfinger, it was built in 1950 and then opened by broadcaster Wilfred Pickles in June 1952. Putney
Putney () is a district of southwest London, England, in the London Borough of Wandsworth, southwest of Charing Cross. The area is identified in the London Plan as one of 35 major centres in Greater London. History Putney is an ancient parish which covered in the Hundred of Brixton in the county of Surrey. Its area has been reduced by the loss of Roehampton to the south-west, an offshoot hamlet that conserved more of its own clustered historic core. In 1855 the parish was included in the area of responsibility of the Metropolitan Board of Works and was grouped into the Wandsworth District. In 1889 the area was removed from Surrey and became part of the County of London. The Wandsworth District became the Metropolitan Borough of Wandsworth in 1900. Wilfred Pickles, OBE (13 October 1904 – 27 March 1978) was an English actor and radio presenter. Early life and personal life Pickles was born in Halifax in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He moved to Southport, Lancashire, with his family in 1929, and worked with his father as a builder. He joined an amateur dramatic society, and in a local production there met Mabel Cecilia Myerscough (1906–1989), all of whose family had been connected with the stage. He remained a proud Yorkshireman, and having been selected by the BBC as an announcer for its North Regional radio service, he went on to be an occasional newsreader on the BBC Home Service during the Second World War. Greenside Primary School is a coeducational primary school in Westville Road in Hammersmith, London, England. Architecture Greenside Primary School is a Grade II* listed building built in 1952 and designed by the internationally renowned architect Ernő Goldfinger. Greenside Primary School (along with Brandlehow School) is one of the two only examples of pre-cast reinforced concrete frame with brick infill designed by Goldfinger after the Second World War with the objective of re-built schools in a functional, fast and economical manner. The building has a fine top lit mural by artist Gordon Cullen that was restored in 2014. History The school is on the site of a Victorian Board School, built in 1886 to accommodate 1,200 children and offer a ‘serviceable education at very low fees.’ The old school was bombed in 1944, but fortunately the children had already been evacuated.
