Bomber (novel)
''Bomber'' is a novel by Len Deighton that was published in the United Kingdom in 1970. It is the fictionalised account of "the events relating to the last flight of an RAF Bomber over Germany on the night of June 31st, 1943", a deliberately impossible date, in which an Royal Air Force, RAF bombing raid on the Ruhr area of western Germany goes wrong. In each chapter, the Plot (narrative), plot is advanced by seeing the progress of the day through the eyes of protagonists on both sides of the conflict. ''Bomber'' was the first novel to be written on a word processor, the IBM MT/ST. Plot summary Sam Lambert is an experienced RAF Bomber Command Avro Lancaster pilot based in East Anglia. The Junkers Ju 88 is a German World War II ''Luftwaffe'' twin-engined multirole combat aircraft. Junkers Aircraft and Motor Works (JFM) designed the plane in the mid-1930s as a so-called ''Schnellbomber'' ("fast bomber") that would be too fast for fighters of its era to intercept. It suffered from technical problems during its development and early operational periods but became one of the most versatile combat aircraft of the war. Like a number of other ''Luftwaffe'' bombers, it served as a bomber, dive bomber, night fighter, torpedo bomber, reconnaissance aircraft, heavy fighter and at the end of the war, as a flying bomb. Krefeld ( , ; li, Krieëvel ), also spelled Crefeld until 1925 (though the spelling was still being used in British papers throughout the Second World War), is a city in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. The BDM-Werk Glaube und Schönheit (German for BDM Faith and Beauty Society) was founded in 1938 to serve as a tie-in between the work of the League of German Girls (BDM) and that of the National Socialist Women's League. Membership was voluntary and open to girls aged 17 to 21. Purpose The Faith and Beauty Society was established in 1938 to act as a link between the ''Bund Deutscher Mädel'' (BDM) and the ''Nationalsozialistische Frauenschaft''. The general idea was that girls should take part in working for the whole ''Volksgemeinschaft'' (German community) before they either went on to jobs orideallyto marry and have children. Freya was an early warning radar deployed by Germany during World War II; it was named after the Norse goddess Freyja. During the war, over a thousand stations were built. A naval version operating on a slightly different wavelength was also developed as the ''Seetakt''.
