Boise Union Pacific Depot
The Boise Depot is a former train station in the western United States, located in Boise, Idaho. Opened in 1925, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP). At an elevation of above sea level on the rim of the first bench, the depot overlooks Capitol Boulevard and the Idaho State Capitol, a mile (1.6 km) northeast. History The depot was built in 1925 by the Union Pacific Railroad, and service by its ''Portland Rose'' began with service between Chicago, Illinois, and Portland, Oregon. Thousands attended its debut with mainline service in mid-April, including Union Pacific president Carl Gray, granted a key to the city by Mayor Eugene Sherman. Mountain Home is the largest city and county seat of Elmore County, Idaho, United States. The population was 15,979 in the 2020 census. Mountain Home is the principal city of the Mountain Home, Idaho Micropolitan Statistical Area, which includes Elmore County. Mountain Home was originally a post office at Rattlesnake Station, a stagecoach stop on the Overland Stage Line, about seven miles (11 km) east of the city, on present-day US-20 towards Fairfield. The ''City of Portland'' was a named passenger train on the Union Pacific Railroad between Chicago, Illinois, and Portland, Oregon. The first trip left Portland on June 6, 1935, using the streamlined M-10001 trainset. With only one set of equipment, the train left each terminal six times a month. A broken axle derailed the trip that left Chicago on July 23, 1935, and the repaired train resumed service with the trip leaving Portland on February 6, 1936. In May 1936 it started running five times a month instead of six, allowing more time in Chicago between trips. It was the first streamliner with sleeping cars and the first streamliner running from Chicago to the Pacific coast; its 39-hour-45-minute schedule became the standard. The Freedom of the City (or Borough in some parts of the UK) is an honour bestowed by a municipality upon a valued member of the community, or upon a visiting celebrity or dignitary. Arising from the medieval practice of granting respected citizens freedom from serfdom, the tradition still lives on in countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, Canada, South Africa and New Zealand—although today the title of "freeman" confers no special privileges.
