Blackwell Farm
Blackwell Farm is the name of one of the estates situated on the Hog’s Back, on the West side of Guildford. Located in the parish of Compton, the historical farm is currently a controversial issue as part of the Guildford Borough Council’s Local Plan consultation. History A farm already stood at Blackwell in the 17th century while the estate was included in the Down Place estate (also called Down Farm). Notable owners Bought by the railway engineer William Frederick Faviell in 1859, the area of Blackwell Farm was then 345 acres. Faviell decided to farm the land himself and hired Henry Peak to design his Model Farm in an industrial form unusual for this part of the country. In 1905, the estate was 636 acres. It became the property of John Cawsey Dennis, co-founder of Dennis Specialist Vehicles, a vehicle manufacturer in Guildford. Hog’s Back
The Hog's Back is a hilly ridge, part of the North Downs in Surrey, England. It runs between Farnham in the west and Guildford in the east. Name Compared with the main part of the Downs to the east of it, it is a narrow elongated ridge, hence its name. Jane Austen, in a letter to her sister Cassandra dated Thursday 20 May 1813 from her brother's house in Sloane Street, wrote of her journey to London in a curricle via "the Hog's-back" :"Upon the whole it was an excellent journey & very thoroughly enjoyed by me; the weather was delightful the greatest part of the day. ... Compton, Guildford
Compton is a village and civil parish in the Guildford district of Surrey, England. It is between Godalming and Guildford. It has a medieval church and a close connection to fine art and pottery, being the later life home of artist George Frederic Watts. William Frederick Faviell
William Frederick Faviell (1822 – 3 July 1902) was a British railway constructor. He constructed the first railway in India and later built railways in Ceylon and South Africa. Biography Faviell was born in 1822 in Yorkshire. Son of a builder of bridges and canals, he began to work as a railway engineer on the Great Eastern Railway in Colchester with two of his brothers. Later, he decided to move his interests overseas and built railways in India, Ceylon and South Africa. Back in England, he bought the estate of Down Place in the Surrey where he lived with his wife Sarah and their six children until 1890. Dennis Specialist Vehicles
Dennis Specialist Vehicles was an English manufacturer of commercial vehicles based in Guildford, building buses, fire engines, lorries (trucks) and municipal vehicles such as dustcarts. The Gloster Meteor was the first British jet fighter and the Allies of World War II, Allies' only jet aircraft to engage in combat operations during the Second World War.
