Blackberry River
The Blackberry River is a westward-flowing river located entirely in the far northwest corner of the U.S. state of Connecticut. The river runs for through the towns of Norfolk and North Canaan, where it empties into the Housatonic River. The river provided waterpower for industrial purposes from the early 1700s through the first part of the 20th century. New Marlborough is a town in Berkshire County, Massachusetts, United States. It is part of the Pittsfield, Massachusetts Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population was 1,528 at the 2020 census. New Marlborough consists of five villages: Clayton, Hartsville, Mill River, New Marlborough Village and Southfield. History New Marlborough was established as one of the four townships opened along the road between Sheffield and Westfield. The land was purchased from the local Native Americans (a band of Mohican Indians) by 72 proprietors from Marlborough, Massachusetts and vicinity, and the deed to the land was certified by the General Court in Boston in 1736. The Blackberry River Inn (historically known as the Moseley House-Farm) is a Colonial Revival architecture, colonial mansion at 538 Greenwoods Road West (United States Route 44) in Norfolk, Connecticut. Constructed in 1763, the mansion was listed on the National Register of Historic Places under its historic name in 1984. History The first parts of what is known as Blackberry River Inn today were erected in 1763. It was extensively renovated in the 1920s according to designs of architect Alfredo S.G. Taylor, an architect from New York City who summered in Norfolk. and Taylor designed a large number of works in Norfolk, and the alterations to this house were among the more ambitious of his renovation projects, leaving little indication of the original appearance. Beckley Furnace Industrial Monument
The Beckley Furnace Industrial Monument is a state-owned historic site preserving a 19th-century iron-making blast furnace on the north bank of the Blackberry River in the town of North Canaan, Connecticut. The site became a state park in 1946; it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978. Description The Beckley Furnace stands in what is now a rural area of central North Canaan, on the south side of Lower Road just west of its junction with Furnace Hill Road. The site spans the Blackberry River, with the main blast furnace and its developed features on the north bank. The main furnace is a large stone structure, tall and per side at the base, gradually sloping to at the top. It is set near the road, which runs at a high elevation above a stone retaining wall.
