Björkudden
Björkudden ( fi, Koivuniemi) is a manor house in Östersundom, Helsinki, Finland, designed by the architect Wilhelm Linsén and built in the mid-19th century. Koivuniemi was the home of the Finnish writer and historian Zacharias Topelius. After his death it returned to the previous owners and is to the present owned by the Lilius family. Östersundom
Östersundom (previously known in Finnish as ''Itäsalmi'') is a subdistrict of Helsinki, Finland, near to the border of Sipoo. The area previously belonged to the municipality of Sipoo, but it was annexed to Helsinki on January 1, 2009 as part of the Southwest Sipoo Association ( fi, Lounais-Sipoon osakuntaliitos), although the municipality of Sipoo opposed the idea. Östersundom Manor and its side manor Björkudden, where Zachris Topelius lived for the last years, are located in Östersundom. Zacharias Topelius
Zachris Topelius (, ; 14 January 181812 March 1898) was a Finnish author, poet, journalist, historian, and rector of the University of Helsinki who wrote novels related to Finnish history. Given name Zacharias is his baptismal name, and this is used on the covers of his printed works. However, "he himself most often used the abbreviation Z. or the form Zachris, even in official contexts", as explained in the National Biography of Finland. Zachris is therefore the preferred form used in recent academic literature about him. Other spellings used are Sakari and Sakarias. Carl Snoilsky
Count Carl Johan Gustaf Snoilsky (8 September 1841 Р19 May 1903) was a Swedish lyric poet, known for his realist poetry. Biography Snoilsky was born in Stockholm to Sigrid (n̩e Ban̩r), a painter and countess, and Nils Snoilsky, a Justice and Chamberlain Count. He was educated at the Clara School and Stockholms lyceum and in 1860 became a student at the University of Uppsala. He was trained for diplomacy, which he quit for work at the Swedish Foreign Ministry. As early as 1861, under the pseudonym of Sven Tr̦st, he began to print poems, and he soon became the center of the brilliant literary society of the capital. In 1862 he published a collection of lyrics called ''Orchideer'' ("Orchids"). During 1864 and 1865 he was in Madrid and Paris on diplomatic missions. Alexandra Gripenberg
Alexandra Gripenberg, also known as Alexandra van Grippenberg, (1857 – 24 December 1913) was a Finnish social activist, author, editor, newspaper publisher, and elected politician, and was a leading voice within the movement for women's rights in Finland at the turn of the 20th century. She was also known as a Fennoman. Biography Gripenberg was born in 1857, and her family were Swedish-speaking nobles. She was instrumental in the establishment of the first official women's rights organization in Finland, the Suomen Naisyhdistys (Finnish Women's Association), in Helsinki in 1884 and became one of its active members. She served as the president of the association for two terms, 1889–1904 and 1909–1913. Between 1887–1888, she traveled in England and the United States, to study lessons from the women's movements of those countries.
