Colin Bettany
Colin David Bettany (born 15 June 1932) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Crewe Alexandra and Torquay United. Bettany, a Leicester-born full back, was an amateur with his local side Leicester City when he signed professional forms with Crewe Alexandra in August 1953. Six goals from 29 league games led to a transfer to Birmingham City in June 1955, but in two years at St Andrew's he was never to make a league appearance. In April 1957 he joined Torquay United, making his debut at centre forward on the opening day of the following season in a 3–0 defeat away to Colchester United. After three games Bettany lost his place as Torquay manager Eric Webber shuffled his side to allow Dennis Lewis to return after injury. After two games on the sidelines, Bettany returned to the side, but at full-back where he was to establish himself. Fred Bettany
Frederick Bettany (1860 – 9 June 1924) was an English footballer who played for Burslem Port Vale and Stoke. Career Bettany played for Burslem St. Paul's and Burslem before joining Stoke in 1885. He played in both FA Cup matches in the 1885–86 season as Stoke lost to Crewe Alexandra in a replay. He was released by Stoke at the end of the season. He played for Burslem Port Vale at right-half in a 1–1 home draw with Great Lever in a friendly match on 11 April 1885. George Thomas Bettany
George Thomas Bettany (30 March 1850 – 2 December 1891) was an English biologist, anthropologist, and author of scientific and popular works. Born in Penzance, Cornwall, the son of George Bettany, a schoolmaster and journalist. Bettany was educated privately and then from 1868 to 1870 at Guy's Hospital. On 1 October 1870 he matriculated at Caius College, Cambridge, where he graduated B.A. 1874 and M.A. 1877. He lectured for some years on biology at Girton and Newnham Colleges, Cambridge, and was lecturer on botany at Guy's Hospital from 1877 to 1886. He edited Ward, Lock, and Co.'s "Science Primers for the People," and the "Popular Library for Literary Treasures," and "The Minerva Library of Famous Books," and occupied the position of English editor of ''Lippincott's Monthly Magazine''. Thane William Howard Hardcastle Christopher Bettany (28 May 1929 – 7 November 2015) was an English actor and dancer. He was the father of film and theatre actor Paul Bettany. Early years Thane Bettany was born in Sarawak, an independent state on the island of Borneo, which was then a British protectorate governed by the White Rajahs. Her published books cover classical antiquity and myth, and the history of Istanbul. She is active in efforts to encourage the teaching of the classics in UK state schools.
