Bendigo Province was an electorate of the Victorian Legislative Council . It was created in the redistribution of provinces in June 1904, North Central Province being abolished. Victorian Legislative Council
The Victorian Legislative Council (VLC) is the upper house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria, Australia, the lower house being the Legislative Assembly. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The Legislative Council serves as a house of review, in a similar fashion to its federal counterpart, the Australian Senate. Although, it is possible for legislation to be first introduced in the Council, most bills receive their first hearing in the Legislative Assembly. The presiding officer of the chamber is the President of the Legislative Council. The Council presently comprises 40 members serving four-year terms from eight electoral regions each with five members. With each region electing 5 members using the single transferable vote, the quota in each region for election, after distribution of preferences, is 16.7% (one-sixth). Herbert Keck
Herbert Keck (28 January 1859 – 8 June 1937) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sandhurst to grocer William Keck and Eliza Collcutt. He worked as a mason before purchasing land at Kennington, becoming a nurseryman and orchardist. He also owned land at Barham, Cohuna and Elmore. On 16 May 1882 he married Ann Pattinson, with whom he had eight children; he had two later marriages, one, on 29 June 1906, to Ada Pattinson, and one, on 2 December 1933, to Margaret June Ireland. He served on Strathfieldsaye Shire Council from 1898 to 1937 and was president five times (1903–04, 1912–13, 1918–19, 1927–28, 1936–37). In 1921 he won a by-election for Bendigo Province in the Victorian Legislative Council, representing the Nationalist Party. National Party Of Australia – Victoria
The National Party of Australia – Victoria is a political party in Victoria, which forms the state branch of the federal Nationals. Historically, it represented graziers, farmers and rural voters. However, the modern National Party no longer represents these traditional interests; shifting its focus to support the mining industry and as a result, ignoring the challenges faced by rural communities and farmers struggling with the effects of climate change and mining practices such as fracking. The Victorian Farmer's Union formed in 1914 was the precursor to the Victorian Country Party, later the Nationals. John Lienhop
Sir John Herman (Henry) Lienhop (3 February 1886 – 27 April 1967) was an Australian politician and grazier. He was the member of the Victorian Legislative Council for Bendigo Province from June 1937 to February 1951. Lienhop was born in Kangaroo Flat near Bendigo to Albert Lienhop, a German publican, and Irish-born Bridget Nash. His father died in 1896, and Lienhop took over management of the family's pub, the Kangaroo Flat Hotel. From 1912, he owned an 8000-acre grazing property called The Springs at Womboota near Deniliquin. Elections were held in the Australian state of Victoria on Saturday 12 June 1937 to elect 17 of the 34 members of the state's Legislative Council for six year terms. MLC were elected using preferential voting. For the first time, voting became compulsory for elections for the Legislative Council, having been compulsory for the elections for the Legislative Assembly since 1927. United Australia Party
The United Australia Party (UAP) was an Australian political party that was founded in 1931 and dissolved in 1945. The party won four federal elections in that time, usually governing in coalition with the Country Party. It provided two prime ministers: Joseph Lyons ( 1932–1939) and Robert Menzies ( 1939–1941). The UAP was created in the aftermath of the 1931 split in the Australian Labor Party. Six fiscally conservative Labor MPs left the party to protest the Scullin Government's financial policies during the Great Depression. Led by Joseph Lyons, a former Premier of Tasmania, the defectors initially sat as independents, but then agreed to merge with the Nationalist Party and form a united opposition. George Lansell
Sir George Victor Lansell (3 October 1883 – 9 January 1959) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in London to mining entrepreneur George Lansell and Harriet Edith Bassford. He was educated in Bendigo and at Melbourne Grammar School, and in 1906 inherited his father's estate of £6 million. He owned the ''Bendigo Independent'' newspaper and merged it with the ''Bendigo Advertiser'' in 1918, and was chairman of a large number of media and other companies around regional Victoria. During World War I he served in the AIF with the 38th Battalion, becoming a captain but being wounded on the Western Front. In 1923 he was awarded the Volunteer Decoration and promoted to commanding officer of his battalion; he was raised to the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1927 and appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1937.
