George Lansell
Sir George Victor Lansell (3 October 1883 – 9 January 1959) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in London to mining entrepreneur George Lansell and Harriet Edith Bassford. He was educated in Bendigo and at Melbourne Grammar School, and in 1906 inherited his father's estate of £6 million. He owned the ''Bendigo Independent'' newspaper and merged it with the ''Bendigo Advertiser'' in 1918, and was chairman of a large number of media and other companies around regional Victoria. During World War I he served in the AIF with the 38th Battalion, becoming a captain but being wounded on the Western Front. In 1923 he was awarded the Volunteer Decoration and promoted to commanding officer of his battalion; he was raised to the rank of lieutenant-colonel in 1927 and appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George in 1937. The Liberal Party of Australia (Victorian Division), branded as Liberal Victoria, and commonly known as the Victorian Liberals, is the state division of the Liberal Party of Australia in Victoria (Australia), Victoria. It was formed in 1949 as the Liberal and Country Party (LCP), and simplified its name to the Liberal Party in 1965. Arthur Smith (Australian Politician)
Arthur Smith (2 March 1902 – 9 October 1981) was a bricklayer, and a railways employee before becoming an Australian politician and Chief President of the Australian Natives' Association. Early years Smith was born in Barwite to farmer Sidney Gordon Smith and Isabella Martin. He attended public schools at Barwite and Mansfield, and worked as a bricklayer and then a railway employee in Seymour. He was President Seymour branch of the Railway Institute. On 1 December 1934 he married Margaret Breakwell, with whom he had two daughters. Australian Natives' Association Arthur joined Seymour A.N.A. Branch No.136 in 1932. He attended his first A.N.A. Annual Conference at Mildura the same year. He was a regular delegate for Seymour Branch at annual conferences for the next 30 years, missing only 4 conferences in that time. Thomas Grigg (politician)
Thomas Henry Grigg (14 June 1889 – 14 April 1969) was an Australian politician. Born in Maldon to miner Thomas Henry Grigg and Elizabeth Jones, he attended state school before becoming a miner in 1902. On 8 May 1914 he married Ida Alberta May in Sydney, with whom he had three children. He remained in Sydney as a public servant until 1918 before returning to Maldon in 1919 to farm poultry. He was active in the local community, serving on the committees of the Fire Brigade, the Hospital and the State School; he was also President of the Northern District Municipal Association (1943–61) and the Municipal Association of Victoria (1950–54). He was elected to Maldon Shire Council in 1939 and served until 1967 (president 1944–45, 1950–51, 1959–60); originally a member of the Country Party, he resigned to join the Liberal Party in February 1949. John Lienhop
Sir John Herman (Henry) Lienhop (3 February 1886 – 27 April 1967) was an Australian politician and grazier. He was the member of the Victorian Legislative Council for Bendigo Province from June 1937 to February 1951. Lienhop was born in Kangaroo Flat near Bendigo to Albert Lienhop, a German publican, and Irish-born Bridget Nash. His father died in 1896, and Lienhop took over management of the family's pub, the Kangaroo Flat Hotel. From 1912, he owned an 8000-acre grazing property called The Springs at Womboota near Deniliquin. Herbert Keck
Herbert Keck (28 January 1859 – 8 June 1937) was an Australian politician. He was born in Sandhurst to grocer William Keck and Eliza Collcutt. He worked as a mason before purchasing land at Kennington, becoming a nurseryman and orchardist. He also owned land at Barham, Cohuna and Elmore. On 16 May 1882 he married Ann Pattinson, with whom he had eight children; he had two later marriages, one, on 29 June 1906, to Ada Pattinson, and one, on 2 December 1933, to Margaret June Ireland. He served on Strathfieldsaye Shire Council from 1898 to 1937 and was president five times (1903–04, 1912–13, 1918–19, 1927–28, 1936–37). In 1921 he won a by-election for Bendigo Province in the Victorian Legislative Council, representing the Nationalist Party.
