Belmond Ltd. (formerly Orient-Express Hotels Ltd) is a hospitality and leisure company that operates luxury hotels, train services and river cruises worldwide. In 2015, the company had 35 deluxe hotels, 7 tourist trains, 3 river cruises and restaurants in 22 countries. History The company was founded in 1976 by the American entrepreneur James Sherwood with the acquisition of the Hotel Cipriani in Venice from the Guinness family for £900,000. James Sherwood then bought a number of historic rail cars similar to (but likely separate from) those used on the original Orient Express train, which he restored and used to offer rides from Paris and London to his hotel in Venice to wealthy clients,thus the former name of the company. Much of the history of the company is documented in James Sherwood's memoir '' Orient Express: A Personal Journey''. Portofino
Portofino (; ) is a ''comune'' located in the Metropolitan City of Genoa on the Italian Riviera. The town is clustered around its small harbour, and is known for the colourfully painted buildings that line the shore. Since the late 19th century Portofino has attracted tourism of the European aristocracy and it is now a resort for the world's jet set. Belmond La Residencia
Belmond La Residencia is a hotel on the northern coast of Mallorca in the artists’ village of Deià. It sits in the lee of the Tramuntana Mountains and faces the Mediterranean Sea. It consists of two old manor houses and a collection of hillside suites. During the 18th century much of Deià was owned by an order of Cistercian monks. In 1744 the monks acquired Son Canals, one of the twin manor houses that form the core of the hotel. They then directed a source of water to it, to irrigate the estate that surrounds the property. The Spanish government of 1820 expropriated the Church’s lands and Son Canals was one of several estates in Deià to be auctioned. It was bought by Mr. Benito Capó Puigserver in 1821. Belmond Hotel Caruso
Belmond Hotel Caruso is a hotel located in the hill town of Ravello, near Amalfi in southern Italy. It was originally built in the 11th century as a palace by a patrician Roman princely family d’Afflitto who called it the Palazzo D'Afflito - meaning "the afflicted", a reference to both a shipwreck they had when travelling to Constantinople and the afflictions suffered by a family martyr. This palace was largely destroyed, along with much of Ravello and the neighbouring port of Amalfi, by the Republic of Pisa, which was a warring competitor on the Mediterranean routes. Belmond Villa San Michele
The Belmond Villa San Michele is a hotel situated on the hill of Fiesole overlooking Florence, Italy. It is named after the church of St Michael the Archangel. Today it is owned by Belmond Ltd. and is operated as a luxury hotel. History The original building was a monastery, founded in the early years of the 15th century for the Franciscan friars. The land on which it stood had been donated by a Florentine family, the Davanzatis, who also contributed to the monastery's upkeep by gifts of woodlands, further buildings and money. The present building, with its façade attributed to Michelangelo and its imposing loggia, dates from 1600 when it was enlarged and completely renovated by Giovanni di Bartolomeo Davanzati.
