Behind The Beat
''Behind the Beat: Hip Hop Home Studios'' is a book by Raph (Rafael Rashid) where the Home recording, home studios of twenty-eight notable American and British Hip hop production, hip-hop producers are photographed (such as DJ Premier, J Dilla, Madlib, and DJ Shadow), along with brief descriptions of the producers and their studios. It was published in 2005 by Gingko Press. Background Rafael Rashid runs Crookneck, a Melbourne-based record label, and the clothing labels ''Blank'' and ''Princess Tina'', which he co-owns. He originally photographed skateboarding, managing to get a few pictures published. He took on shooting home studios around 1995, when some of his friends began producing techno from their houses. The Nextmen
The Nextmen is a UK production/songwriting/DJ duo consisting of Dom Search (a.k.a. Dominic Betmead) and Brad Baloo (a.k.a. Brad Ellis). Often incorporating hip hop, drum & bass, dub, pop, soul and various other eclectic electronic and indie genres into their sounds, they have worked with many artists from the UK and US. Musical career The Nextmen have been remixers since 2000 working with Public Enemy, the Pharcyde, Blackalicious, Jeru the Damaja, Groove Armada, the Kooks, Fat Freddy's Drop, Rae & Christian, and many more. Their first official remix was for UK hip hop group London Posse on "Style", the Posse's last 12" single, in 1996. J-Zone
Jay Mumford (born February 26, 1977), better known by his stage name J-Zone, is an American record producer, drummer, multi-instrumentalist, rapper, and writer from New York City. Career Known for his quirky lyrics and trash talk style of rapping, J-Zone released a string of idiosyncratic and critically acclaimed albums in the late 1990s and early 2000s that acquired a cult following. Of these, the 2001 release ''Pimps Don't Pay Taxes'', was particularly noted; it featured rappers Huggy Bear and Al-Shid, for whom he would subsequently produce a number of 12" releases. Def Wish Cast (sometimes known as Def Wish Posse or abbreviated to DWC) are a pioneering Australian hip hop group from Western Sydney. Biography Def Wish Cast are an Australian hip hop group who are among the few founders of Australian hip hop, "having created something localised that was revered and is now mythologized." Lucas MacFadden (born October 4, 1972), better known as Cut Chemist, is an American DJ and record producer. He is a former member of Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli. He has collaborated with DJ Shadow on a number of projects. Early life Cut Chemist graduated from University of California, Los Angeles in 1997. Cut Chemist also attended Glendale Community College and took several drawing and life drawing classes in the early 1990's. Career Cut Chemist became known through the Los Angeles-based rap group Unity Committee. The group merged with another group, Rebels of Rhythm, to form Jurassic 5. In 2004, Cut Chemist released ''The Litmus Test'', which included his solo tracks, remixes, and Jurassic 5 tracks. He left Jurassic 5 in 2004. Beastie Boys
Beastie Boys were an American rap rock group from New York City, formed in 1978. The group was composed of Mike D, Michael "Mike D" Diamond (vocals, drums), Adam Yauch, Adam "MCA" Yauch (vocals, bass), and Ad-Rock, Adam "Ad-Rock" Horovitz (vocals, guitar, Programming (music), programming). Beastie Boys were formed out of members of experimental hardcore punk band the Young Aborigines in 1978, with Diamond as vocalist, Jeremy Shatan on bass guitar, John Berry (Beastie Boys), John Berry on guitar, and Kate Schellenbach on drums. Mario Caldato, Jr
Mario Caldato Jr. (born February 24, 1961), also known as Mario C., is a Brazilian-born record producer and studio engineer best known for his work with Beastie Boys, Jack Johnson in the US, Marcelo D2 and Seu Jorge in Brazil. Early life Caldato was born in Sao Paolo, Brazil. When he was two years old, his family moved to Los Angeles. Caldato began playing keyboards as a youth and took classical music lessons. Career In 1986, Caldato met DJ Matt Dike at Los Angeles nightclub Power Tools. At Dike's request, Caldato built a recording studio in Dike's apartment, where he engineered and co-produced Tone Loc and Young MC's hit singles and albums. Corey Scoffern (born May 20, 1975), better known by his stage name The Grouch, is an American rapper and producer. He is currently based in Maui, Hawaii, but grew up and spent most of his time in the San Francisco Bay Area (specifically Oakland, California).
