Begoña or more puristically but also more rarely spelled ''Begoina'', meaning 'the lower foot' (of Mount Artxanda), is a historical municipality of Biscay ( Basque Country, Spain) which was incorporated into Bilbao in 1925. Originally it included all the uplands south and east of the medieval walled town, which now form the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and parts of the 5th urban districts of Bilbao. Nowadays the name is limited to the district including Santutxu, Bolueta and ''Begoña'' proper, a small residential neighbourhood between the Basilica of Begoña and the garden area of Etxebarria Park. Our Lady Of Begoña
The cult of Our Lady of Begoña (''Nuestra Señora de Begoña, la Madre de Dios de Begoña'') celebrates an apparition of the Virgin Mary at the site of the Basilica of Begoña, in Bilbao, Spain. Affectionately called "Amatxu" (meaning "little mother" in Basque), she is said to have appeared to local people in the early 16th century. The feast day of Our Lady of Begoña is 11 October. History The title was established in Bilbao, at Biscay, Spain where, according to local legend, an 8th-century statue of Our Lady was found the hollow of an oak tree on Mount Artagan. Santutxu
Santutxu is a neighbourhood of the Spanish city of Bilbao. It belongs to the 4th urban district, named Begoña. It is a popular residential neighbourhood which has a significant number of small businesses and has received some waves of immigration in the last years, particularly Romanians. The Begoña district consists of three neighbourhoods: Santutxu, Begoña and Bolueta. Basilica Of Begoña
The Basilica of Begoña (or Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Begoña in Spanish) is a basilica in Bilbao, in Spain, dedicated to the patron saint of Biscay, the Virgin Begoña. The current parish priest is Jesús Francisco de Garitaonandia. History The basilica started life in the 16th century, designed by Sancho Martínez de Arego. It has three naves, to which the addition of vaults was completed in the 17th century in construction work that took a century, having started in 1511. During the time of this work, the Gothic style began to show Renaissance influence, and the arched mid-16th century main entrance reflects the transitional style of the Spanish architect Gil de Hontañón. The remainder of the building remains purely Gothic in style. During the 19th century, the basilica was damaged as a result of it forming part of Bilbao's city wall. Mount Artxanda
Mount Artxanda ( eu, Artxanda mendia; es, Monte Archanda) is one of the two small mountain ranges that delimit the municipality of Bilbao, the other one being Pagasarri. Of the two, it is the lower one (at no more than 300 m.), the closer one to the center of the city, and the one that has suffered from more intense urbanization.
