Beatrice Ayuru Byaruhanga
Beatrice Ayuru Byaruhanga (born 1970s) is an Ugandan entrepreneur and school founder. She won the UNCTAD Women in Business Award in 2010 after opening the Lira Integrated school ten years before. Life Byaruhanga was one of sixteen children born to her father in his polygamous marriage. She was raised in Lira and her father was teased that he was wasting money sending his daughters to school when he could have been taking dowries. His daughter Byaruhanga dreamed of having her own school. Her father gave her land to start a school when she was 19 and expecting her second child. She was the first girl to leave her high school and go to university. She graduated from Makerere University and began teaching. Realising that she needed money to build a school she started three business ventures. One of these was to plant cassava on the land her father had given her. Lira is the name of several currency units. It is the current currency of Turkey and also the local name of the currencies of Lebanon and of Syria. Lira is a city in the Northern Region, Uganda, Northern Region of Uganda. It is the main municipal, administrative, and commercial centre of Lira District. History Lira was one of the last towns in Uganda held by loyalists of Idi Amin during the Uganda–Tanzania War (1978–1979). A force consisting of the Tanzania People's Defence Force's 201st Brigade and the Uganda National Liberation Front's Kikosi Maalum attacked Lira on 15 May 1979, ousting the Amin loyalists after a Battle of Lira, short battle. Makerere University
Makerere University, Kampala (; Mak) is Uganda's largest and oldest institution of higher learning, first established as a technical school in 1922. It became an independent national university in 1970. Today, Makerere University is composed of nine colleges and one school offering programmes for about 36,000 undergraduates and 4,000 postgraduates. The main administrative block was gutted by fire in September 2020 and the cause of the fire is yet to be established. Women In Business Award
The Women in Business Award is a biannual award given by the UNCTAD, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD). The competition is restricted to women who have taken part in the EMPRETEC programme. It was first awarded in 2008. 2018 The winner of the Gold award in 2018 was Uneiza Ali lssufo, a civil engineer from Mozambique whose contracting company, ConsMoz Lda, employs 800 people. The award was presented in Geneva in October 2018. The judges singled out the emphasis on green construction and the jobs that she had created for women in particular. Lord's Resistance Army
The Lord's Resistance Army (LRA), also known as the Lord's Resistance Movement, is a rebel group and heterodox Christian group which operates in northern Uganda, South Sudan, the Central African Republic, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Originally known as the United Holy Salvation Army and Uganda Christian Army/Movement, its stated goals include establishment of multi-party democracy, ruling Uganda according to the Ten Commandments, and Acholi nationalism. In practice "the LRA is not motivated by any identifiable political agenda, and its military strategy and tactics reflect this".
