Beach handball at the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics was held from 7 to 13 October in Buenos Aires, Argentina. 20 beach handball teams, total of 200 athletes, participated in the tournament. The beach handball competition took place at the :es:Parque Sarmiento (Buenos Aires), Parque Sarmiento in Saavedra, Buenos Aires, Saavedra. Qualification Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) is limited to participation in 1 team sports (Futsal, Beach handball, Field Hockey, and Rugby Sevens) per each gender with the exception of the host country who can enter one team per sport. Also at Beach handball each NOC can enter a maximum of 1 team of 10 athletes per both genders. To be eligible to participate in the Youth Olympics, athletes must have been born between 1 January 2000 and 31 December 2003. Handball at the Summer Olympics refers to two different sports. Field handball was introduced for men at the 1936 Summer Olympics in Berlin, but dropped after that. At the 1952 Olympics, field handball was a demonstration sport. (Indoor) handball was introduced for men at the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich. Women's handball competition was introduced at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal. A beach is a landform alongside a body of water which consists of loose particles. The particles composing a beach are typically made from rock, such as sand, gravel, shingle, pebbles, etc., or biological sources, such as mollusc shells or coralline algae. Sediments settle in different densities and structures, depending on the local wave action and weather, creating different textures, colors and gradients or layers of material. Though some beaches form on inland freshwater locations such as lakes and rivers, most beaches are in coastal areas where wave or current action deposits and reworks sediments. The Youth Olympic Games (YOG) is an international multi-sport event for athletes between 15 and 18 years old, organized by the International Olympic Committee. The games are held every four years in staggered summer and winter events consistent with the current Olympic Games format, though in reverse order with Olympic Winter Games held in leap years instead of Summer Olympic Games. The first summer version was held in Singapore from 14 to 26 August 2010 while the first winter version was held in Innsbruck, Austria from 13 to 22 January 2012. Handball at the 2014 Summer Youth Olympics was held from 20 to 25 August at the Jiangning Sports Center in Nanjing, China. Qualification A total of 6 teams will participate in each gender. Each National Olympic Committee (NOC) can enter a maximum of 2 teams of 14 athletes, 1 per each gender. As hosts, China is given the choice of entering a male or female team while the other places shall be decided by qualification events, namely five continental qualification tournaments. China chose to enter a girls' team therefore the unoccupied boys' team was reallocated to the best placed continent at the 2013 Men's Youth World Handball Championship (Europe). Furthermore Oceania did not organize a qualifying event for either gender thus the spots were reallocated.
