Bateman Hardware
Bateman Hardware was the earliest hardware shop established in Western Australia (and the second-oldest commercial enterprise of any sort), and until its demise in the 1980s was the longest-running. The business was founded by John Bateman in 1834 on property that he bought in the second round of land sales in the nascent Swan River Colony. This land on Henry Street was to be the home of J. & W. Bateman Ltd. for the next 150 years. Initially it was a shipping and warehousing business (including lighterage and river transport), and 1840 is given (in a 1951 company prospectus) as the "early start of trading, with the help of his young sons, John and Walter". The first item had been sold in 1834, a grindstone possibly belonging to "the implements valued at £55" that Bateman brought to the colony on board . John Bateman (Australian Settler)
John Bateman (1789 – 3 April 1855) was an early colonist at Fremantle. He was the postmaster, general store owner and an investor in the Fremantle Whaling Company. The suburb of Bateman is named after him and his family. Life Bateman was born in London, and was dealing in silk when he married Mary Ann Benningfield in 1824. They had nine children including three sons who emigrated with Bateman and his wife to the new Swan River Colony in Western Australia in 1830. They bought a plot in Fremantle in the second tranche of land made available by the Governor of Western Australia. On this acre of land Bateman built a stone residence and a general store. In 1833 he took on the job of postmaster, a position that his family carried out for many years. Walter Bateman
Walter Bateman (22 June 1826 – 24 September 1882) was a Fremantle merchant who was a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1867 to 1870. Life left, Fremantle Cemetery The son of silk merchant John Bateman, Walter Bateman was born in London on 22 June 1826. In 1830 the Bateman family emigrated to Western Australia on board the ''Medina'', settling in Fremantle, Western Australia where John Bateman established himself as general store owner, whaler and postmaster. Following his father's death in April 1855, Bateman's mother took over as postmaster. After her, Bateman held the position until November 1861. He served on the Fremantle Town Trust in 1860, 1862 and from 1864 to 1865. Swan River Colony
The Swan River Colony, also known as the Swan River Settlement, or just Swan River, was a British colony established in 1829 on the Swan River, in Western Australia. This initial settlement place on the Swan River was soon named Perth, and it became the capital city of Western Australia. The name was a ''pars pro toto'' for Western Australia. On 6 February 1832 the colony was renamed the Colony of Western Australia, when the colony's founding lieutenant-governor, Captain James Stirling, belatedly received his commission. Henry Street is a street in Fremantle, Western Australia. It was named after John Henry, second lieutenant of . It was developed very early in the history of the Swan River Colony with licensed premises being located as early as 1833. Henry Street has seen significant funeral processions pass along it on their way to the Fremantle Cemetery. Lightering
Lightering (also called lighterage) is the process of transferring cargo between vessels of different sizes, usually between a barge (lighter) and a bulker or oil tanker. Union Stores Building
The former Union Stores Building is a heritage listed building located at 41–47 High Street, Fremantle, High Street on the corner with Henry Street, Fremantle, Henry Street in the Fremantle West End Heritage area. Construction of the building commenced in 1895 for prominent local merchant John Wesley Bateman to house his growing Bateman Hardware, hardware business. Bateman's business had occupied a building at the corner of Mouat Street and Croke Street for the previous 25 years before he decided to build larger premises at the present address. The new building designed by architects, Herbert Nathaniel Davis, Davis and Wilson, was built at a cost of £7,000 giving Bateman a more central location and more space. Built in the Federation style, Federation Free Classical style the two storey building was constructed from brick and stone. Herbert Nathaniel Davis
Herbert Nathaniel Davis (20 December 1867 – 14 March 1900) was an Australian architect responsible for designing a number of the extant heritage buildings in Fremantle, Western Australia. He died at the age of 32, and was interred in the Jewish section of Fremantle Cemetery. Biography Early life Davis was born on 20 December 1867 in Sydney, New South Wales, into a Jewish family. His father Eleazor (or Eleazer) M. Davis, originally from Exeter, England, Exeter, was a businessman, importing and selling a variety of goods from their Bazaar, shop "The Civet Cat" (also known as "The Civet Cat Fancy and General Repository" and "The Civet Cat Fancy Bazaar") at 98 King Street, Sydney, King Street in central Sydney.
