Batagraf
Batagraf (established 2005 in Oslo, Norway) is a Norwegian percussion ensemble, created and led by Jon Balke. Formed in 2003, the concept of the group was to research and investigate the relation between rhythm and language, inspired by various African and ethnic traditions. The group functions as a core group with a pool of collaborators. In 2009 they attended the Nattjazz in Bergen with the entertainers Are Kalvø and Espen Beranek Holm, two of Norway's most popular radio personalities, for the show «Pratagraph» gaining brilliant reviews. Batagraf has oalso collaborated with sound poets like Jaap Blonk and Sidsel Endresen, as well as rappers and instrumental soloists like Runar Gudnason, Nils Petter Molvaer, Arve Henriksen and more. Snorre Bjerck
Snorre Bjartmann Bjerck (born 25 February 1962) is a Norwegian jazz musician (drums, percussion and vocals). He has played in bands like "First Set", Jon Balke, Batagraf, and the sami band Transjoik., and is otherwise known from recordings and performances with others like: Morten Harket, Sissel Kyrkjebø, Mari Boine, Nils Petter Molvær, Bjørn Eidsvåg, Sigvart Dagsland, Frode Alnæs, Eivind Aarset, Annbjørg Lien, Arve Henriksen, Nils-Olav Johansen, Tim Whelan Trans Global Underground, Karoline Krüger among others. Helge Norbakken
Helge Andreas Norbakken (born 1965) is a Norwegian drummer known for his collaborations with Mari Boine, Jon Balke (MNO/Bathagraf/Siwan), Kari Bremnes, Maria Joao, Karl Seglem, Becaye Aw, Miki N'Doye, Jovan Pavlovic, and Anne Wylie. He is married to Dagrun Hjelleset Norbakken. Career Norbakken is a graduate of the Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonservatorium (1985–88), and is one of the most renowned Scandinavian percussionists. Jon Balke
Jon Georg Balke (born 7 June 1955) is a Norwegian jazz pianist who leads the Magnetic North Orchestra. He is the younger brother of saxophonist Erik Balke. Career Balke started playing classical piano but switched to blues at 12, though he performs within several genres. At the age of 18 he joined Arild Andersen's quartet. By the mid-1980s he worked on his own and would become one of Norway's leading jazz composers. He was active in the groups of Radka Toneff and in the Afrofusion group E'olén before joining Oslo 13 and Masqualero in the early 1980s. From 1989 he focused on his own projects, such as JøKleBa (with Audun Kleive and Per Jørgensen) and the Magnetic North Orchestra for which he composed the commissioned work ''Il Cenoneat'' to Vossajazz 1992. Emilie Stoesen Christensen
Emilie Stoesen Christensen (born 1986 in Oslo, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz singer and actor, the daughter of Jazz drummer Jon Christensen (1943–2020) and actress Ellen Horn (b. Stoesen in 1951), and half sister of Theater director Kjersti Horn (b. 1977). She has lately been gaining recognition for her work with a number of Norwegian bands, including the «Oslo JazzNonett», and made her record debut with Jon Balke's Batagraf album ''Say And Play'' (2011) at ECM Records. Trondheim Voices
Trondheim Voices (established 2001 in Trondheim, Norway) is a Norwegian vocal group, best known for their improvised performances in the jazz genre. Biography Trondheim Voices started out as a Christmas Concert, initiated by Midtnorsk Jazzsenter (MNJ) in 2001, and subsequently developed into a permanent group with a consistent vocal ensemble and a specially made repertoire. The state supported ensemble has had up to fifteen singers. Today the ensemble counts eight to nine singers, and both crew and artistic directors vary from project to project. Among others Live Maria Roggen, Eldbjørg Raknes, and Tone Åse have had artistic directory for projects together with «Cirka Teater». Trondheim Voices is a department of high priority at MNJ (Midtnorsk Jazzsenter), with Tone Åse as artistic leader. Kenneth Ekornes
Kenneth Ekornes (born 7 July 1974 in Sykkylven, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician (percussion) and member of the 'Brazz Brothers', known from a number of recordings, as well as for his multiethnic musical expression and his creative use of electronics. Career Ekornes is a graduate of the Rhythm program at Høgskolen i Agder and play in bands like Desafinado, Nymark Collective, Gumbo, Batagraf led by Jon Balke (''Statements'', 2005). Ingar Zach
Ingar Zach (born 29 June 1971 in Oslo, Norway) is a Norwegian percussionist and businessman, known from several recordings. Career In the 1990s Zach played within Chateau Neuf Spelemannslag and 'Harnihomba', while studying music at the University of Oslo (1993) and composition on Jazz program at Trondheim Musikkonsevatorium (1994–97). Within the trio 'Tri-Dim' (1997–2000) he released two albums together with Håkon Kornstad (saxophone) and David Stackenäs (guitar). Solveig Slettahjell (born 2 April 1971 in Bærum, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz singer, known for her soulful, seductive voice. Career Slettahjell had her record debut with the album ''Slow Motion Orchestra'' (2003), contains jazz standards like "All the Way" and " My Heart Belongs to Daddy". Sidsel Endresen
Sidsel Endresen (born 19 June 1952) is a Norwegian singer, composer, and actress. She was part of the Jon Eberson group. Since 1987, Endresen has pursued a successful solo career, recording for ECM. Career Endresen was one of the most pronounced female jazz musicians in Norway in the beginning of the 21st century. She is a versatile artist, who likes to challenge her voice with new experimental forms and combination of jazz and other artistic expressions. Her work has moved from "fusion" and "chamber jazz" in the 1980s and 1990s, to improvisational "new" musical forms in the mid 1990s until today. Are Kalvø (born 31 December 1969) is a Norwegian writer and satirist. He was born in Stranda. His debut work as writer was ''Absolutt Oslo'', released in 1994. Later satirical books were ''Kunsten å vere neger'' (1996), ''Men fjernkontrollen min får du aldri'' (1997), ''Harry'' (1999), ''Bibelen 2'' (2002, with Steffen Kverneland), ''Syden'' (2002) and ''Våre venner kinesarane'' (2007). Espen Beranek Holm
Espen Beranek Holm (born 23 March 1960) is a Norwegian pop artist and comedian. Career Beranek is a Norwegian solo artist. His debut single ''Dra te' hælvete'' (1981), which was a great success, caused controversy when the song was banned by NRK. It was followed up by the albums ''Sound of Danger'' (1981), ''X-Ray'' (1983), ''Trigger'' (1984), ''Daylight In the Dark'' (1986), ''The Red File'' (1988) and ''Tacoma Bridge'' (1994). He provided synth, guitar, bass, drums and vocal on all albums, and produced all albums himself. Jean Jaques Burnel from the Stranglers recorded one track together with Beranek on ''Trigger''.
