Barros Luco
Barros Luco is a hot sandwich in Chile that includes beef and melted cheese in one of several types of bread. The sandwich is named after Chilean president Ramón Barros Luco, who served as President of Chile from 1910 to 1915. The sandwich was created in the restaurant of the National Congress of Chile, where president Barros Luco always asked for this sandwich. Other sources point to Confitería Torres as the place where the sandwich was created. The president's cousin, senator Barros Jarpa, asked instead for sandwiches with ham and cheese, as he found the beef hard to eat. These sandwiches became known as Barros Jarpa. Ramón Barros Luco
Ramón Barros Luco (; June 9, 1835 – September 20, 1919) was President of Chile between 1910 and 1915. Barros Luco was born in 1835 in Santiago, Barros Luco was son of Ramón Luis Barros Fernández and Dolores Luco Fernández de Leiva. He graduated from Law School in 1858. He died in Santiago in 1919. He was elected representative for the city of Casablanca in 1861, and from then on occupied a seat in the Lower House, being elected representative for Caldera (1867–70), Curicó (1870–73), Valparaíso (1873–76, and 1888–91), as well as for Santiago, during four separate terms, between 1876 and 1894. Later, he was elected senator for Linares (1900–06). In his position as President of the House of Deputies in 1891, he endorsed the move to dismiss the then President of the Republic, José Manuel Balmaceda, a move drawn up by the Congress. The Former National Congress Building (''ex Congreso Nacional'') is the former home of the Chilean Congress. Congress met in this building in central Santiago until Salvador Allende's socialist government was overthrown by Augusto Pinochet's military coup d'état on September 11, 1973. During the Pinochet dictatorship, Congress was moved to new premises in Valparaíso; the old building was declared a national monument in 1976 and between 1990 and 2006 housed the ministry of foreign affairs.
