Baltimore Marathon
The Baltimore Marathon is the flagship race of several races held in Baltimore, Maryland known collectively as the Baltimore Running Festival. The event was once one of the fastest-growing marathons in the United States, but the number of finishers in the marathon hadeclined each year since 2013 Additionally, the number of elite runners attending has almost disappeared since the elimination of prize money for winners following the 2012 running of the marathon. For the 2022 marathon, Under Armour created a 26-member team to run in the festival. Its 17 men and 9 women are local residents with full-time jobs, unlike elite professional runners who compete for a living. The sport apparel company’s goal was to give them “the most premium experience possible. Providing them with footwear, training, and access to Under Armour coaches and staff." Kathrine Switzer
Kathrine Virginia Switzer (born January 5, 1947) is an American marathon runner, author, and television commentator. In 1967, she became the first woman to run the Boston Marathon#History, Boston Marathon as an officially registered competitor. During her run, race manager Jock Semple assaulted Switzer, trying to grab her bib number and thereby remove her from official competition. After knocking down Switzer's trainer and fellow runner Arnie Briggs when he tried to protect her, Semple was shoved to the ground by Switzer's boyfriend, Thomas Miller, who was running with her, and she completed the race. The Amateur Athletic Union, AAU banned women from competing in races against men as a result of her run, and it was not until 1972 that the Boston Marathon established an official women's race. Mykola Antonenko (also known as Nikolai Petrovich Antonenko) (born September 2, 1972) is a Ukrainian middle- and long-distance runner, and Ukrainian national champion in the 10K. He is the winner of multiple notable road races and a top finisher in major international races. Running career At the age of 16, Antonenko won the Ukrainian junior 5000 metres championship. A year later, he became the 3-kilometer junior champion of the USSR in the labor reserves. Erick Kimaiyo Kimase (born 8 July 1969) is a Kenyan former marathon runner who came second at the 1997 Berlin Marathon, and won the Honolulu and Baltimore Marathons on multiple occasions. Kimaiyo now works as a marathon coach, and trains current women's world record holder Brigid Kosgei. Personal life Kimaiyo is the cousin of fellow Kenyan former runner Raymond Kipkoech. He has four children. Running career In 1996, Kimaiyo finished 18th at the Boston Marathon, in a time of 2:14:37. Later in the year, he won the Honolulu Marathon in a time of 2:13:23. It was the second fastest marathon time that year. Kimaiyo and Jimmy Muindi had broken away around into the race, and Kimaiyo was awarded $20,000 for winning the race. Marianne Dickerson (November 14, 1960 – October 14, 2015) was a female long-distance runner from the United States. Dickerson was born in St. Joseph, Illinois. She was a star runner first at St. Joseph-Ogden High School, then at the University of Illinois after a stint on a track scholarship to the University of Michigan. (She earned a bachelor's in general engineering from the University of Illinois and a master's in industrial engineering from the University of Michigan). Jerome Drayton (born January 10, 1945 in Kolbermoor, Bavaria, Germany) is a former long-distance runner who competed internationally for Canada. He was born as Peter Buniak in Germany, and came to Canada in the mid-1950s when his mother moved there after divorcing his father. He reportedly based his new name on two famous sprinters he admired: Canadian former world record holder Harry Jerome and American Paul Drayton, former world record holder in the 4 × 100 m as part of the American relay team. Garry Bjorklund
Garry Brian Bjorklund (born April 22, 1951) is an American middle- and long-distance runner. He represented the United States in the 1976 Summer Olympics in the 10,000 meters. As a high schooler, he set a Minnesota state record for the mile run which lasted 39 years. At the University of Minnesota, he won the 1971 national championship in the six-mile run, and won numerous conference championships in various disciplines. Following his 1976 Summer Olympics appearance, Bjorklund became a marathon runner, and set a national age group record in 1980.
