Balkan Jews refers to Jews who live or lived in the Balkans. History The Jewish communities of the Balkans were some of the oldest in Europe and date back to antiquity. The oldest communities of Jews in the port cities of the Balkans date back to the 4th century B.C during the reign of Alexander the Great in what would become North Macedonia. Communities continued to form in Dalmatia, Slavonia, and Serbia from the 1st century A.D., partially as a result of the First Jewish–Roman War violently put down by Emperor Titus. In the medieval ages, Jews were recorded as living in Ljubljana in 1213, in Rijeka in 1346, and in Split in 1397. These older Jewish communities predated the arrival of Sephardi Jews and merged with the newer populations that came from Spain and Portugal. Avars (Caucasus)
The Avars, also known as ''Maharuls'' ( Avar: , , "mountaineers") are a Northeast Caucasian ethnic group. The Avars are the largest of several ethnic groups living in the Russian republic of Dagestan. The Avars reside in the North Caucasus between the Black Sea and the Caspian Sea. Alongside other ethnic groups in the North Caucasus region, the Avars live in ancient villages located approximately 2,000 m above sea level. The Holocaust in the Independent State of Croatia ( hr, Holokaust u Nezavisnoj Državi Hrvatskoj; he, השואה במדינת קרואטיה העצמאית) involved the genocide primarily of Jews, and also the genocide of Serbs (the Genocide of the Serbs) and Romani (''Porajmos''), within the Independent State of Croatia ( hr, Nezavisna Država Hrvatska, NDH), a fascist puppet state which existed during World War II, was led by the Ustaše regime, and ruled an occupied area of Yugoslavia which included most of the territory of modern-day Croatia, the whole of modern-day Bosnia and Herzegovina and the eastern part of Syrmia (Serbia). Racial Purity
The term racial hygiene was used to describe an approach to eugenics in the early 20th century, which found its most extensive implementation in Nazi Germany (Nazi eugenics). It was marked by efforts to avoid miscegenation, analogous to an animal breeder seeking purebred animals. This was often motivated by the belief in the existence of a racial hierarchy and the related fear that "lower races" would "contaminate" a "higher" one.
