''Back of My Hand'' is the third single by Irish singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes taken from her ''Night on My Side'' album release. The single was released in Ireland on 26 September 2002. The single was released Source Records. Two versions of the single were released - incorporating slightly different covers and track listings. The second CD was very limited upon release and the single was only available in Ireland. A re-worked version of the track appeared on the 2003 US release of ''Night on My Side''. A digital version of the song appeared on iTunes on 1 March 2003. Gemma Hayes
Gemma Hayes (born 11 August 1977) is an Irish musician, singer-songwriter and composer. Primarily known as a vocalist and guitarist, she is also proficient with a wide range of instruments, including the piano and the harmonica. She is also a member of The Cake Sale and Printer Clips. Early life Hayes grew up in Ballyporeen, Tipperary with her parents and seven other siblings. She was surrounded by music from an early age heavily influenced by her siblings and her father who was a keyboardist in a local band. Hayes would later move to County Limerick to attend boarding school. By this time, Hayes was proficient at piano and found that the music used to counter the boredom of living in a small village. She would later move to Dublin City to attend UCD to study sociology, psychology and history. ''Night on My Side'' is the debut album by Irish singer-songwriter Gemma Hayes, first released by Source Records on 24 May 2002 in the Republic of Ireland, 27 May 2002 in the United Kingdom, and 10 July 2002 in Japan. The album's release in North America was delayed until 22 April 2003, where it was released by Astralwerks Records with a different track listing and album artwork. The album was nominated for the 2002 Mercury Music Prize but lost out to Ms. Dynamite's ''A Little Deeper''. Background Following the release of two acclaimed EPs in 2001 ('' 4.35am'' and ''Work to a Calm''), Hayes returned to record her debut album at Tarbox Road Studios in New York and Black Box Studios in France, with some of the original demos previously recorded in Dublin.
