Bùi Xuân Phái
Bùi Xuân Phái (September 1, 1920 – June 24, 1988) was a Vietnamese painter. He is famous for the paintings of Hanoi Old Quarter. He also painted the actors and musicians of Vietnamese opera. Biography The best known of all Vietnamese modern painters, Phai is respected and admired for both his art and moral character. He epitomizes for the Vietnamese the lone artist suffering for his art: he lost his teaching position at the Hanoi College of Fine Arts in 1957 for supporting Nhân Văn affair a movement for political and cultural freedom and was not allowed to show his work in public until a solo exhibition in 1984. However, in 1996, he was posthumously awarded with a Hồ Chí Minh prize. Bui Xuan Phai unfortunately died in 1988, in Hanoi, the place of his birth. Old Quarter, Hanoi
The Old Quarter ( vi, Phố cổ Hà Nội) is the name commonly given to the historical civic urban core of Hanoi, located outside the Imperial Citadel of Thăng Long. This quarter used to be the residential, manufacturing and commercial center, where each street was specialized in one specific type of manufacturing or commerce. Another common name referring to approximately the same area is the 36 streets ( vi, Hà Nội 36 phố phường), after the 36 streets or guilds that used to make up the urban area of the city. Google Doodle
A Google Doodle is a special, temporary alteration of the logo on Google's homepages intended to commemorate holidays, events, achievements, and notable historical figures. The first Google Doodle honored the 1998 edition of the long-running annual Burning Man event in Black Rock City, Nevada, and was designed by co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin to notify users of their absence in case the servers crashed. Early Marketing employee Susan Wojcicki then spearheaded subsequent Doodles, including an alien landing on Google and additional custom logos for major holidays. Nhân Văn–Giai Phẩm Affair
The ''Nhân Văn-Giai Phẩm'' affair ( vi, Phong Trào Nhân Văn-Giai Phẩm) was a cultural-political movement in North Vietnam in the late 1950s. Two periodicals were established during that time, Nhân Văn (, ''Humanities'') and Giai Phẩm (, ''Masterpieces''), many issues of which were published demanding freedom of speech, creativity and human rights. Following a loosening of political restrictions with some similarities to the Chinese Hundred Flowers Campaign, there was a hardening of attitudes. After those two major journals were closed down, their political associates were imprisoned or reeducated. Moreover, the agenda of ''Nhân Văn-Giai Phẩm'' was linked to "reactionary" political projects by North Vietnamese government.
