Byron Bay Railway Station
Byron Bay railway station is a former railway station located on the Murwillumbah line in Byron Bay, New South Wales, Australia. It opened on 15 May 1894 and closed on 16 May 2004, when the line from Casino was closed. The station complex was built from 1894 to 1913. The property was added to the New South Wales State Heritage Register on 2 April 1999. Station today Despite no longer being served by trains, the station remains open as a NSW TrainLink booking office. A pub occupies a building at the southern end of the platform. The station forecourt is served by NSW TrainLink coach services to Grafton, Casino, Tweed Heads, Surfers Paradise and Brisbane, Greyhound Australia services to Brisbane, and Sydney, and Premier Motor Service services to Brisbane, Lismore and Sydney. Mullumbimby railway station was a station on the Murwillumbah railway line, Murwillumbah line opening on 15 May 1894. The 620/720 class railcars were a class of diesel multiple unit built by the New South Wales Government Railways and operated from 1961 until 2007. Construction The 620/720 class railcars were an evolution of the 600/700 railcars that had been built in 1949/50. Like their predecessors they were built with an aluminium body on a steel frame at the New South Wales Government Railways' Chullora Railway Workshops. New South Wales 600/700 Class Railcar
The 600/700 class railcars were a class of diesel multiple unit built by the New South Wales Government Railways. They were built to operate on branch lines from 1949 with low traffic volumes later being transferred to Newcastle and Wollongong to operate suburban services until withdrawn in 1994. However, one 600 class railcar was converted to solar operation for use on the Byron Bay Train service. The upgraded train entered service on 16 December 2017 and is believed to be the world's first solar-powered train. Construction In January 1946, approval was given for the construction of 10 two car sets. It was decided that they would be constructed at the new New South Wales Government Railways' Chullora Railway Workshops. They were built with an aluminium body on a steel frame. Byron Bay Railroad Company
The Byron Bay Train is a not-for-profit passenger rail service in Byron Bay, New South Wales. Since commencing in December 2017, it operates on a three-kilometre section of the disused Casino-Murwillumbah line. A 1949-built 600 class railcar was converted to solar power for use on the service. History The first section of the Murwillumbah line (which the Byron Bay Train uses) opened between Lismore and Murwillumbah, connecting the Richmond and Tweed rivers. Passengers and goods were transported to Sydney by coastal shipping from Byron Bay. Nine years later, an extension from Lismore to Casino opened (and later south to Grafton – it was not until 1932 that the line was fully connected to Sydney).
