Jo Byrns
Joseph Wellington "Jo" Byrns Sr. (July 20, 1869 – June 4, 1936) was a U.S. politician. He served as a 14-term Democratic congressman from Tennessee, and as the 41st speaker of the United States House of Representatives. Early life Byrns was born in Cedar Hill, Robertson County, Tennessee, son of James Henry Byrns and Mary Emily Jackson. He was named for a maternal uncle, Joseph William Green Jackson, who died in the American Civil War. His great-grandfather, James Byrns, Esq., figures in the legend of The Bell Witch, and is mentioned in the Authenticated History of The Bell Witch by Martin Van Buren Ingram. The Byrns family moved to Nashville in 1885 to pursue greater educational opportunities for their children. Jo Byrns attended Fogg High School, graduating in 1887. He then enrolled at Vanderbilt University, where he won honors in English and history, actively participated in debates, and became a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity. Elinor Byrns
Elinor Byrns (1876 — May 27, 1957) was an American lawyer, pacifist, and feminist, co-founder of the Women's Peace Society and the Women's Peace Union. Early life and education Elinor Byrns was born in Lafayette, Indiana in 1876, attended the Girls' Classical School in Indianapolis, and graduated from the University of Chicago in 1900. She earned her law degree at New York University. Career Byrns worked at a corporate law firm in New York City for two years, until she left in disillusionment at how the law was practiced. She drew from the experience for her 1916 essay in ''The New Republic'', titled "The Woman Lawyer," declaring, "I do not want to practise law if it means playing a game." Activism Byrns was active in New York City's feminist circles in the 1910s, as a member of Heterodoxy, and helping to plan the first suffrage parade on Fifth Avenue. Harold Byrns
Harold Byrns (13 September 1903 – 22 February 1977) was a German-American conductor and orchestrator. Biography He was born Hans Bernstein in Hanover, Kingdom of Prussia, German Empire, in 1903. His father had formed a chamber music society in Hanover, and he followed in his father's footsteps. He studied with Walter Gieseking, Erich Kleiber and Leo Blech at the Stern Conservatory in Berlin, and became assistant to Kleiber and Blech. He worked as a conductor in Lübeck, Oldenburg, and Berlin (Staatsoper, Deutsche Oper) before emigrating to Italy in 1933 and then to the United States in 1936. He changed his name from Hans Bernstein to Harold Byrns because he felt he could not make it in America with a Jewish name. He formed his own chamber orchestra, the Harold Byrns Chamber Orchestra, which was regarded as the American counterpart of the Boyd Neel String Orchestra. Samuel Byrns
Samuel Byrns (March 4, 1848 – July 9, 1914) was a U.S. Representative from Missouri. Born on a farm in Jefferson County, Missouri, Byrns studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1872 and commenced practice in Hillsboro, Missouri. He served as collector of revenue for Jefferson County in 1872. He served as member of the State house of representatives in 1876 and 1877. He served in the State senate in 1878. He served as member of the Democratic State central committee 1886–1888. Byrns was elected as a Democrat to the Fifty-second Congress (March 4, 1891 – March 3, 1893). He was an unsuccessful candidate for renomination in 1892 to the Fifty-third Congress. He resumed the practice of his chosen profession in De Soto, Missouri, where he died on July 9, 1914.
