Bygholm Manor
Bygholm Castle is a former royal castle and manor house located just south of Horsens, Denmark. It traces its history back to 1313 but the current Baroque buildings date from 1775. Owned by Horsens Municipality, the main building is now run as a hotel while the associated land is a public park and used as fair grounds. History Bygholm Castle was founded in 1313 upon orders from King Eric VI Menved following a revolt among peasants in Jutland. The castle was run by a vassal ('' lensmand''). The most famous of these to reside at Bygholm was Erik Lange, who belonged to Tycho Brahe's social circle but experienced economic ruin, experimented with alchemy and left Bygholm in a state of neglect. As a result, and possibly after a fire in the beginning of the 17th century, later vassals preferred to reside at nearby Stjernholm and the name of the fee was changed accordingly. Baroque Architecture
Baroque architecture is a highly decorative and theatrical style which appeared in Italy in the early 17th century and gradually spread across Europe. It was originally introduced by the Catholic Church, particularly by the Jesuits, as a means to combat the Reformation and the Protestant church with a new architecture that inspired surprise and awe. It reached its peak in the High Baroque (1625–1675), when it was used in churches and palaces in Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Bavaria and Austria. In the Late Baroque period (1675–1750), it reached as far as Russia and the Spanish and Portuguese colonies in Latin America. About 1730, an even more elaborately decorative variant called Rococo appeared and flourished in Central Europe. The Baroque (, ; ) is a style of architecture, music, dance, painting, sculpture, poetry, and other arts that flourished in Europe from the early 17th century until the 1750s. In the territories of the Spanish and Portuguese empires including the Iberian Peninsula it continued, together with new styles, until the first decade of the 19th century. It followed Renaissance art and Mannerism and preceded the Rococo (in the past often referred to as "late Baroque") and Neoclassical styles. Niels Emanuel De Thygeson
Nicolai Emanuel de Thygeson or Niels Emanuel de Thygeson (19 April 1772–16 May 1860) was a Danish-Norwegian landowner and government official. The Thygeson family was originally a Danish noble family. Nevertheless, Thygeson was one of those who worked purposefully for Norway's secession from Denmark and the establishment of a Norwegian constitution. Career Thygeson was the County Governor of Hedemarkens amt from 1802 to 1804. In 1804, he was promoted and named the Diocesan Governor of Christianssand stiftamt. He held that job until 1810. He then returned to Denmark to run his estate there. In 1812, he was appointed to be the Diocesan Governor of Christiania stiftamt. Thygeson made a name for himself when, in the dramatic days of September 1807, he (as the Governor) ordered a British warship to be protected with cannons at Christiansholm Fortress. Jørgen Rantzau (1652–1713) was a Danish Major general who fought several campaigns under John Churchill, 1st Duke of Marlborough. Biography Jørgen Rantzau from a military family. He was the son of Colonel Frantz Rantzau of Estvadgård (ca. 1620-1670) and the younger brother of Major General Johan Rantzau (1650-1708). In 1678, Rantzau became Lieutenant Colonel, in 1682 Colonel and in 1691 Lieutenant commander in Jutland. In 1701, he became Brigade commander and in 1705 General major.
