Bury Academy Football Club was a football club based in Bury St Edmunds, England. History Ahead of the 1999–2000 season, Bury Academy were formed, gaining admission into the Essex Senior League. Prior to their opening league game against Burnham Ramblers, the ''Daily Gazette'' described the club as a "young but very skilful, organised side, but they may find senior league football a little too physical". Bury Academy subsequently lost the game 3–1. After losing their opening four games, conceding 15 and scoring twice, manager Joe Taylor resigned. In total, the club played eight games in all competitions, scoring twice and conceding 35 goals, before resigning from the Essex Senior League on 1 October 1999, the day before they were due to play East Ham United. The Essex Senior Football League is an English men's football league. It contains clubs from the Essex FA, Hertfordshire FA, London FA, Middlesex FA and the Amateur Football Alliance. It is a feeder league to Division One North of the Isthmian League and has a single division which sits at Step 5 (or Level 9) of the National League System. Founder members The Essex Senior League was formed in 1971 with nine founder members. The finishing positions for the 1971–72 season were as follows: Promotion and relegation The Essex Senior League states that a club must finish in the top 3 to be considered for promotion to the Isthmian League Division One North. The ''Daily Gazette'', often known as the ''Colchester Gazette'', is a local daily newspaper covering the north-east Essex area of England. An earlier newspaper of the same name was published from 1877, as a weekly. It closed in 1970, and Essex County Newspapers launched the ''Evening Gazette'' as a replacement, published daily from Monday to Friday. Based at Oriel House in the city of Colchester, it also covered Braintree, Clacton, Harwich and Maldon. In 2009, management and subediting of the newspaper, including the post of editor, were moved to Basildon, outside the area the paper covers. At the time, the National Union of Journalists claimed that this meant that "the daily paper in the area will effectively be an edition of the Basildon publication".
