Burton Downing
Burton Cecil Downing (February 5, 1885 – January 1, 1929) was an American racing cyclist who competed in the early twentieth century. An all round cycling talent, he competed in Cycling at the 1904 Summer Olympics and won two gold medals in the 25 mile and the 2 mile, three silver medals in the ¼ mile, ⅓ mile and mile and a bronze medal in the ½ mile race. In later years Downing served as president of the George B. Spearin, Inc. construction company. It was whilst he was serving in this role that he contracted pneumonia which developed into meningitis. Track Cycling
Track cycling is a bicycle racing sport usually held on specially built banked tracks or velodromes using purpose-designed track bicycles. History Track cycling has been around since at least 1870. When track cycling was in its infancy, it was held on velodromes similar to the ones used today. These velodromes consisted of two straights and slightly banked turns, though they varied more in length and material than the modern 250m track. One appeal of indoor track racing was that spectators could be easily controlled, and hence an entrance fee could be charged, making track racing a lucrative sport. Early track races attracted crowds of up to 2,000 people. Indoor tracks also enabled year-round cycling for the first time. Red Bank is a borough in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. Incorporated in 1908, the community is on the Navesink River, the area's original transportation route to the ocean and other ports. Red Bank is in the New York Metropolitan Area and is a commuter town of New York City. Meningitis is acute or chronic inflammation of the protective membranes covering the brain and spinal cord, collectively called the meninges.
