Burnside FC
Burnside A.F.C. Was an association football club based in the suburb of Burnside in Christchurch, New Zealand. They merged with Avon United in 2011 to form FC Twenty 11. In 2007 it was the largest football club in the South Island. Club history Founded in 1967 as Burndale United (the name being a portmanteau of the suburb names Burnside and Bishopdale), the name was changed first to Burnside United and then simply to Burnside A.F.C. The club's colours of claret and blue reflect those of founding secretary Terry McIntyre's favourite team, West Ham United. Burnside A.F.C. originally played home matches at Burnside Park. Sometime before 2000, they began to play at a variety of parks, including Burnside, Jellie Park, Avonhead Park and Ray Blank Park. In 2004, 2005 and 2006 Burnside were the 'Mainland Premier Qualifying League' champions. Burnside Park, Christchurch
Burnside Park is a cricket ground in Burnside, Canterbury, New Zealand. The first recorded match on the ground came when Canterbury Women played Auckland Women in 1974. The ground later held its only first-class match in 1991 when Canterbury played Central Districts in the 1991/92 Shell Trophy, with the match ending in a 3 wicket victory for Canterbury. It is the home ground of the Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club. The park also has Burnside Rugby Club, Burnside Bowling Club, Burnside Tennis Club as well as other recreation facilities. Burnside is a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, located southeast of Christchurch International Airport. As with most suburbs in Christchurch, it has no defined boundaries and is a general area. History Burnside was originally part of a farm, approximately in size, owned by the early settler William Boag (1828-1904), who arrived in 1851 from Perthshire. Avon United Football Club was a New Zealand amateur football club based in the city of Christchurch. The club was based in the western part of Christchurch and draw most of their players from Avonhead, Riccarton, Burnside, Fendalton, Ilam, Bryndwr and Hornby. The club rooms are situated at Riccarton Domain on Yaldhurst Road. The club consists of around 550 junior players (boys and girls) with grades from Midget (approx 5 years) all the way to Premier Youth (under 19). Bishopdale is a residential suburb located in the north of Christchurch, New Zealand. Bishopdale lies close to Christchurch International Airport at Harewood and Christchurch's zoo, Orana Wildlife Park. History The suburb takes its name from the three Bishop brothers, James (1826–1910), Robert (1827–1909) and William (1829–1903), who bought land in the area in 1858 or 1859 and established pipfruit orchards. Initially, the area was called "Bishopsdale", but the second 's' was dropped from the name.
