Burnside Park, Christchurch
Burnside Park is a cricket ground in Burnside, Canterbury, New Zealand. The first recorded match on the ground came when Canterbury Women played Auckland Women in 1974. The ground later held its only first-class match in 1991 when Canterbury played Central Districts in the 1991/92 Shell Trophy, with the match ending in a 3 wicket victory for Canterbury. It is the home ground of the Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club. The park also has Burnside Rugby Club, Burnside Bowling Club, Burnside Tennis Club as well as other recreation facilities. Burnside, Canterbury
Burnside is a suburb of Christchurch, New Zealand, located southeast of Christchurch International Airport. As with most suburbs in Christchurch, it has no defined boundaries and is a general area. History Burnside was originally part of a farm, approximately in size, owned by the early settler William Boag (1828-1904), who arrived in 1851 from Perthshire. It was named for the small creeks that formed the headwaters of the Waimairi Stream. The name Burnside was made official by the Waimairi County Council in 1959, although Burnside Road had been renamed Memorial Avenue in 1950. Cricket
Cricket is a bat-and-ball game played between two teams of eleven players on a field at the centre of which is a pitch with a wicket at each end, each comprising two bails balanced on three stumps. The batting side scores runs by striking the ball bowled at one of the wickets with the bat and then running between the wickets, while the bowling and fielding side tries to prevent this (by preventing the ball from leaving the field, and getting the ball to either wicket) and dismiss each batter (so they are "out"). Means of dismissal include being bowled, when the ball hits the stumps and dislodges the bails, and by the fielding side either catching the ball after it is hit by the bat, but before it hits the ground, or hitting a wicket with the ball before a batter can cross the crease in front of the wicket. The Canterbury Magicians is the women's representative cricket team for the New Zealand region of Canterbury. They play their home games at Hagley Oval, Christchurch. They compete in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield one-day competition and the Women's Super Smash Twenty20 competition. They are the most successful side in the history of the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield, with 39 title wins. The Auckland Hearts is the women's representative cricket team for the New Zealand region of Auckland. They play their home games at Eden Park Outer Oval. They compete in the Hallyburton Johnstone Shield one-day competition and the Women's Super Smash Twenty20 competition. First-class cricket, along with List A cricket and Twenty20 cricket, is one of the highest-standard forms of cricket. A first-class match is one of three or more days' scheduled duration between two sides of eleven players each and is officially adjudged to be worthy of the status by virtue of the standard of the competing teams. Plunket Shield
New Zealand has had a domestic first-class cricket championship since the 1906–07 season. Since the 2009–10 season it has been known by its original name of the Plunket Shield. History The Plunket Shield competition was instigated in October 1906 with the donation of a shield by William Plunket, 5th Baron Plunket, who was the Governor-General of New Zealand from 1904 to 1910. For the 1906–07 inaugural season, the Shield was allotted by the New Zealand Cricket Council "to the Association whose representative team it considers to have the best record for the season". Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club
Burnside West Christchurch University Cricket Club or BWCUCC is a cricket club that plays at Burnside Park, Christchurch, Canterbury, New Zealand. It is one of the oldest cricket clubs in Christchurch, having been established in 1905. As of the start of the 2016/17 season the club has 11 adult teams which play in several grades in the Christchurch Metropolitan Cricket Association. The club also has 10 junior Saturday teams in the Christchurch Junior Cricket Association leagues. They also have a very well supported Friday night league for younger cricketers (school years 1–3) who are just being introduced to the game.
